The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. Mt Beauty's Swimming Pool was built by Alpine Shire and included a Squash Court. October 1986. Previously the community swam in the West and East Kiewa Rivers. Arthur George Holley No 13556 enlisted in the RAN as a boy Sailor on 25.9.22 age 15 years. During his long career he served on or at the following postings; HMAS Tingara, Brisbane, Sydney, Cerebus (5 times), Canberra (2), Australia, Hobart, Townsville, Rushcutter. His main WW2 service was on HMAS Hobart 27.1.39 - 14.9.44. At discharge from the RAN on 17.10.45 he held the rank of Leading Seaman, Seaman Torpedoman. All three men had a long association with 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. John Neale served in RAN during WWII; post war he joined 8/13 VMR as a trooper in 1948. He rose through the ranks to command the regiment in 1972-76, and later became Honorary Colonel. Ron Almond served in WWII; following the war he joined the Regular Army and served several postings to the Cadre Staff of 8/13 VMR including a post as Regimentla Sergeant Major. He also served with the Australian Army Training Team in South Vietnam. Bill Woolford served in the Royal Marines in WWII; post war he migrated to Australia joining the Victoria Police and was posted to Wodonga.
