Machine - Dairy, Milk Separator manual, c1900
A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past where farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated by letting milk sit in a container until the cream floated to the top when it could be skimmed off by hand. Some of the skimmed milk was consumed while the rest was used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold. Manual rotation of the separator handle turns a mechanism which causes the separator bowl to spin at thousands of revolutions per minute. When spun, the heavier milk is pulled outward against the walls of the separator and the cream, which is lighter, collects in the middle. The cream and milk then flow out of separate spouts. Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872.as a mail-order business in Chicago, Illinois USA. Rural customers were attracted by the wide selection of items that were unavailable to them locally and were also inspired by the innovative company policy of "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back".This milk separator is typical of the type used by early settlers in Moorabbin Shire where every family owned a 'house cow' to supply their dairy needs. Households also kept a few chickens for eggs and developed a vegetable garden with additional fruit trees. Manufactured Object, Torch 'Eveready' c1950, c1950
George Reed was a draftsman living in the City of Moorabbin c 1950 1899, David Misell, invented this "electric device" ( torch / flashlight) powered by "D" batteries laid front-to-back in a paper tube with the light bulb and a rough brass reflector at the end. Misell assigned his invention over to the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company owned by Conrad Hubert. In 1905, Hubert changed the name again to The American Ever Ready Company, selling torches / flashlights and batteries under the trademark Ever Ready. In 1906 the British Ever Ready Electrical Company was formed for export of batteries; it became independent in 1914. The American Ever Ready Company became part of National Carbon Company in 1914. The trademark was shortened to Eveready. In 1986, Union Carbide sold its Battery Products Division to Ralston Purina Company becoming the Eveready Battery Company, Inc. and in 1992, it bought the British Ever Ready Electrical Company. Prior to March 1, 1980, the company's alkaline battery had been called the Eveready Alkaline Battery (1959–1968), Eveready Alkaline Energizer (1968–1974) and Eveready Alkaline Power Cell (1974–February 29, 1980). On March 1, 1980, it was rebadged under its current name, Energizer. 2019 production plant in Portage, Wisconsin, but the majority of batteries are made in China and there are also numerous production facilities outside the US. Newsletter, CMHS June 2014 pdf, June 2014
The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Jim Dale continued to produce the Newsletter in 2013 after Helen resigned4 x A4 paper pages printed on one side with colour photograph, Jim Dale, President, welcomes members to the June 29th Meeting and recounts the discovery of a large brush tailed possum in the Cottage on April 27th. The courageous removal of this possum by Carol, the damage to artefacts and the clean up by members. All added to the excitement of the visitors especially children. Glen Eira Council was notified Monday 3oth April, requesting a grate over top of Chimney but no action has been taken yet. Dennis has installed a temporary barrier at base of chimney in fireplace.. Manufactured Object, 'Crest' Home Hair Perm Kit in box, c1950
A permanent hairstyle, commonly called a perm or "permanent" is a hairstyle consisting of styles set into the hair lasting a number of months using thermal or chemical means. In the latter method, chemicals are applied to the hair, which is then wrapped around forms / rods to produce hairstyles with varying degrees of wave or curls. Usually this styling is performed by Hairdressers, in Beauty Salons, however, manufacturers appealing to the 'thriftiness' of the post world war 2 women produced products that could be used at home. It became very popular for women in the new estates to gather with their neighbours to give each other this new 'Home perm' with some success and failure. Gladys Reed used this type of Home perm while a resident of City of Moorabbin c 1950Typical Home Hair Perming equipment used to style their own hair by women in City of Moorabbin c1950A cardboard box containing solution, equipment and instruction booklet for home treatment of hair to produce permanent waves.hairdressers, hairdressing equipment, permanent wave, hair fashion, hair styling 1950, grooming, personal effects, early settlers, post world war 2 estates moorabbin, reed gladys. reed george, clark judy, bentleigh, moorabbin, highett, ormond. -
