David Douglas (1799-1834) journeyed to the Pacific North-West as well as to other parts of the New World looking for new species of plants. The Royal Horticultural Society of London hoped to introduce new and exciting plants to its gardens.After Douglas's explorations in the New World, hundreds of new species became available. As a result flower beds and theme gardens with new exotic specimens and aboreta became fashionable. It was mooted that the Olympic Village for the 1988 Olympic Games (which may have been held in Melbourne) was proposed for the grounds around VCAH Burnley. The principal, Mr Davis, is stated to have been keen about the prospect because of the huge influx of money there would have been for the college.
