Journal - Annual school magazine, The Peninsula School, Peninsula School Journal, 1964
The end of 1964 saw the first edition of The Peninsula School Journal published. It was intended to be not only a record of School activities but also an opportunity for the students to contribute prose, verse, art and photography. The editing was done by the students under the guidance of Mr Laurie Arter, the Senior English Master. The Pen evolved from an A5 sized booklet (1964-71) to an A4 book (1972-80), then came the renaming of the publication, from the Peninsula School Journal to the Pen (1981). Numbering dropped with 1990 issue. The Pen has been published annually 56 times, except for 2020 when schools were in lockdown due to COVID-19.A5 size, 60 pagesnon-fictionThe end of 1964 saw the first edition of The Peninsula School Journal published. Photograph - Cluny Convent (formerly 'Fairview'), 34 Wrixon Street, 1988
Frederick J. Robinson, a manufacturer, was the owner and occupier of a nine-roomed brick house by at least 1934. At that date the N.A.V. for the property was £270 while in the following year the N.A.V. increased to £350 with a note of 'additions' being made, recorded in the Rate Books. By December 1936 Robinson's house was being described as having twelve rooms and an N.A.V. of £295. The works were undertaken for Robinson by the leadng architect, Harold Desbrowe Annear, and appear to have been a comprehensive remodelling of the Victorian house on the site, the outline of which was clearly depicted in the MMBW plan of 1903. 'Fairview' is of significance as a comprehensive remodelling of a Vietorian house undertaken in the 1930s by the leading architect of the time, Harold Desbrowe Annear. The 1930s are integral to the significance of the whole. Print - Printmaking - Lithograph, Tulloch, David, 'Great Meeting of Gold Diggers Dec 15th 1851' by Thomas Ham, 1852
One of the first large goldfield meetings was at Castlemaine in 1851. After the extraordinary success of the Mt Alexander Diggings the Government issued a proclamation, raising the licence fee from thirty shillings to three pounds. As soon as these intentions became known a public meeting of miners was held. For miles around work ceased, with diggers travelling as far as Bendigo to attend the meeting. It is estimated that around 18,000 people attended the meeting. The notes with the engraving state The trees in this locality are chiefly Stringybark; some of them are peeled of their covering, as many persons prefer erecting bark huts to living in a comfortless tent. The various groups, and costumes of the men, are characteristic of our gold digging community. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Colour lithograph of a meeting of diggers at a meeting in Mt Alexander. Mt Calvin, the homestead of Jeanie and Willie Richardson can be clearly seen in the clearing above the men in the picture. The white roof of the Barber homestead is on the right of the picture. A landslide in 1934 destroyed the tree ferned area. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph that is a copy of a Rose series postcard titled 'The Picturesque Road to Mt. Dandenong. Vic.' It shows two men (probably Rose Series employees), one sitting and one standing at the edge of an unmade road. Large tree ferns line the roadside. Handwritten inscription on reverse by John Lundy-Clarke1913 View east from Doughty’s Road showing Jeannie Richardson’s home through the gap in the trees. A little to the right of and below centre of picture can be seen George Barber’s home with Barbers Road turning around the wagon shed that was a little up the hill from the house. The tree ferns in the picture were destroyed in the landslide of 1934. In the distance at the right can be seen F.M.
