Tom Thumb and Lady were performers in P.T. Barnum’s circus. Once they became engaged, the public developed a fascination for them—nicknaming them the “little couple.” Barnum used their engagement to publicize his show, parading the couple around to different nations’ leaders and placing newspaper announcements detailing their upcoming wedding ceremony. On their wedding day in New York City, over 2,000 people entered the church to watch the couple say their vows. A newspaper article promoting Legacy Week in The Age on 9 September 1960. The caption of the photo says 'Junior Legatee Jim Illingworth wore an appealing smile as he proudly displayed a Legacy Appeal poster at Legacy House yesterday. The target of today's appeal is £30,000.' He could be the same junior legatee that posed for an image of a Legacy Boy that was printed as a brochure in 1960 with the slogan 'The Legacy Boy, worthy son of a worthy father.' The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. A photo printed in the newsletter in June 1955 to show the Annual demonstration from October 1954. This photo shows the senior girls on stage. The caption says 'Senior Girls - Health Set'. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.A record of the displays at the Annual Demonstrations. Spielvogel's story says Young was the secretary at James & Birds auctioneers and "was one of the builders of the first foot bridge over the Backwater". It says George Holden was a Bank Manager at the Bank of Victoria. (info. from Campbell Watt) This photograph shows Mr Nathan Spielvogel on the left. He was a school teacher at the Orbost State School following Mr Rowe. Nathan Frederick Spielvogel (1874-1956), teacher, writer and historian, was born on 10 May 1874 at Ballarat, Victoria, son of Newman Frederick Spielvogel, pawnbroker, and his wife Hannah, née Cohen. As well as his stories he published a number of books about the history of Ballarat. Spielvogel taught at Orbost for at least a year Nathan Frederick Spielvogel (1874–1956) was a teacher, writer and historian. As a country schoolteacher, he traveled widely in the eastern Australian outback and also made a journey to London. Spielvogel gained distinction as one of the only Australian Jewish writers of his time. Many of his early books were best-sellers. He has an association with the history of Orbost having spent a year as a teacher at Orbost. (right) together with the Secretary of the Association, Mr Henry Farrell, thanked the ladies of Melbourne Legacy for their contribution to help keep the Aussie Flag Flying. Through the President of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club, Mrs Billie Simms, Ross Watson presented a framed certificate to mark the splendid work of Melbourne Legacy Widows in attaching miniature Australian flags to thousands of sprigs of rosemary prepared for Anzac Day marchers and for the 2,000 plus school children who attend Legacy's annual Anzac Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance." Similar to another certificate from the Australian National Flag Association given to the Melbourne Legacy Club in June 1984. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01049). The explanation of the source of the rosemary was in the same folio but the described photo is missing. A photo of a mural in Libya painted by a South Australian Sapper of a bottle of Abbots Lager. The photo, and two others, were sent to Melbourne Legacy in 1979 by Legatee Syd Wilson of Yamba NSW. He thought Melbourne Legacy might be able to use them to generate money by selling them for advertising or publicity. He said they were enlargements of snapshots he had found in his old army trunk. The text says 'Keep Going. Fill up in town, but a good drink is bloody hard to get'. Legatee Wilson's letter says the murals were: 'painted on three walls of a white concrete Italian block house (Police Check post I think), some 18/20 miles west of Tobruk, between Tobruk and Derna, and near a captured Italian airfield, somewhere about February 1941. Obviously they were painted by a Victorian Sapper. They were very well done, by a competent Sign-writer/artist, in correct and excellent colours (captured Itie paint no doubt - there was plenty in their Naval Stores at Tobruk).' (NB Itie was slang for Italian) From the AWM website the signs were painted by South Australian painter, SZ538 Sapper Leslie John “Doc” Dawes, 2/3rd Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. The “Ugly man Contest” was a fund raiser for the P.O.W comfort fund in which £3891 was raised. (Pounds). The certificate was given to William (Bill) John Turner Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. Refer Cat No 8029 re this effort and others by Bill Turner. This postcard was sent by "O.G." to J. Gawler on 7 February 1915 from an Army camp in Egypt. The postcard appears to have been hung up by a thumb tack as there is a small hole at the top centre of the card. This item is representative of the letters and postcards that were sent home to war by servicemen during the First World War and was a way to maintain a connection to their loved ones during difficult and uncertain times. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. This postcard also records places for those who didn't have cameras. This type of souvenir would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1 and many had passed through Egypt.The front image of the postcard is a photograph of a camp of white canvas tents lined up in rows in front of a pyramid. Several soldiers can be seen walking throughout the campsite. On the reverse is a message written in black ink. There is also a small hole in the top centre of the postcard.Message on reverse of postcard is dated 7.2.15 and says: "This is a view of part of Mena camp where the 1st Australian Division has been camped. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 1. Replicas include the 1914 Star, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Mercantile Marine War Medal, 80th Anniversary of Armistice Remembrance Medal. Also a WW1 Memorial Plaque and Anzac Commemorative Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and one with embroidered Air Force wings from the Australian Flying Corps. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. A tug of war held in Melbourne City Square to promote Legacy Week in 1992. The note mentions it was a Legacy team against a media team. Ron Barassi can be seen at the end of the rope of the Legacy team. The note also mentions a widow who jumped in to help, Mrs Amy Chandler (lady in navy blue). The judge appears to be Sir Weary Dunlop. Another photo shows a staff member (Susie Howard?) and radio personalities also competing - possibly the Fox FM crew that helped in other events. Ron Barassi was a Legacy boy after his father died at Tobruk in 1941. He helped promote Legacy in many ways and at many events over many years. This plaque recognises the Wycheproof servicemen from State School No1757 who served in the 1914-1919 War. The actual large Honour Roll hangs in the old historic Wycheproof State School building.This Honour Roll contributes to and is part of the nation's collection of War Records; it is unique,believed to be the only one of its kind.PHOTO of large Wycheproof School Honour Roll WW1, on wall at the former Wycheproof S.S. Olive Wilkinson was born in 1917 in Ararat. She and her husband both worked at the Ovens Benevolent Home, with her as a temporary matron when the need arose, and her husband as the Superintendent. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke. Mrs Olive Wilkinson's account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural history of the region. She details historical events pertaining to Beechworth and her family. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth'. While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side. The ensignette was a vest pocket camera. The Ensignette was one of the very characteristic camera types of Houghtons Ltd., London. This strut folding roll film camera of Houghton's "Ensign – British made" brand was an ingenious construction, a real vest pocket item when folded. One of the round framed impressions on its front plate says that it was based on patent 28464 of the year 1907. The Swedish engineer Magnus Neill had designed this first British all-metal camera of which ten of thousands were made. The camera was launched before Christmas 1909. It was ordered by distributors all over the world, for example by G. Gennert. Embarked for Eygpt on 22.2.15 then to Gallipoli on 7.5.15, WIA on 6.8.15 GSW to the neck, returned to Australia for discharge with the recommendation he was permanently unfit on 17.9.15. He re enlisted in Bendigo No 5715 in 18th reinforcements to the 8th Batt AIF on 4.3.16 age 30 years 9 months writing a letter to say he was perfectly fit. "William (Bill) Clark was engineering manager with Fruehauf tractors, and now starts life as a minister at Kaniva. He'd been in transport engineering for almost 30 years before studying for ordination. The children, both grown up, one married, will remain in Melbourne. Bill told me he enjoys working with people and looks forward to the opportunity to share with lay people who know their community, in communicating toward and with the whole community the love and concern of the gospel. Photos taken at the 13th Annual Widows' Art and Craft Exhibition held at Legacy House in 1994. The note with the photos says: "The quality and ingenuity of the arts and crafts entered were outstanding and quite a daunting task for the judge, Mrs Janice Bridges". This was an Annual Art and Craft Exhibition that was run by the widows club. The items could be sold at trading tables and at the table outside Legacy House during Badge Week in September to raise funds. There were craft afternoons throughout the year for widows to learn new skills and gather together at Legacy House.
