From the Till collectionTHE TILL COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT|The significance of the Alwyn Till Collection is that Alwyn was born in Mitcham in 1921. He attended Mitcham Primary School and Box Hill Boys High School. He served his Community mainly through his activities within the Christ Church Anglican Church Mitcham. He joined the Royal Australian Airforce in World War II in September 1939. He trained as a Pilot in Australia and Canada, was posted to England and saw action in Europe. He was shot down over France and rescued by and then joined the French Resistance and while fighting with them was fatally shot. A Baron fighting with him wrote to his mother to inform her of his death.|Alwyn's parents were Evaleen Victoria Till (nee Maggs) and Sydney Norman Till who first lived in Creek Road Mitcham, before moving to 573 Whitehorse Road Mitcham. His father served in World War I where his eyesight was damaged and he was taught by the then Blind Institute in suitcase making of which we have two examples in this collection. He died in 1931. Alwyn took over responsibility for his mother and sister Alison. We can understand how devastated his mother and sister would have been at the news of Alwyn's feeling that he must serve his country in World War 11.|His letters home were so precious to them that they carefully kept all his correspondence, notices of death and condolences from friends. After Alison's death in 2007 her relation Joan Walker transcribed each of Alwyn's letters home into two bound volumes. The executors, Joan Walker and Anne Drew deposited the original letters with the Whitehorse Historical Society. Due to their significance as historical documents of one serviceman's complete correspondence with his family the Whitehorse Historical Society Committee after consultation with the donors deposited the original letters with the State Library of Victoria. The Whitehorse Historical Society retains the copies.|Alison and her mother kept many family memorabilia and personal items which make up this significant collection as they show how people lived, worked and served in the local community and municipality.|This collection represents the love and devotion of the women to their families during the course of two world wars. The father was disabled as a result of World War 1 and died an early death and a son who thereafter took on the responsibility as head of the family at an early age. This young handsome charismatic son served his community in peace time and gave his life in World War 11. This battle dress jacket is dated 1969 (manufacturing date). It was issued to the “Prince of Wales’s Light Horse’ Regiment however the date of issue is unknown. A Prince of Wales Light Horse unit was based in Kyneton, a neighboring town to Woodend. This jacket likely originated from the Kyneton area. The jacket type was still in use during the Vietnam war in which the Regiment participated. There are two rows of black cotton piping on the edges of the collar. The front is made up of four pieces. The two centre panels are shaped at the bust line. The two side panels are narrow at the shoulders and flare slightly from the hip line to the hem line. There is a decorative line of stitching on the front seams. The front of the coat is fastened with three black buttons (2 cm) and button holes. The back of the coat is made up of three pieces. The centre panel is shaped in at the waistline. This suture needle was used by Ferguson Fisher, a farmer, of Orbost. He was a private , 17340, with the army medical corps reinforcements and then with 8 Field Ambulance. He did his initial training at Seymour Clearance Hospital (AMC) at Royal Park and then 5 Australian General Hospital. He served in France and Belgium. He was not a trained doctor but had been taught to stitch wounds.He returned to Australia in 1919. Bogong is a local town between Mt Beauty and Falls Creek and was established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The school was opened on 28th Jan. 1941 and closed c1986. This flexible measuring tape was used by the SEC Victoria in the mid to late 1900's. It was in a period before digital measuring instruments were in use. This is a 33ft long tape measure and would have been used by the construction workers when building the Kiewa Valley Hydro System. The warning details (embossed into the leather covering) was to warn users to be careful not to use the tape near live electricity terminals or linkages. This tape was produced mainly for wooden structures and not electricity conductive material. This was during the 1950's to 1960's.This imperial tape measure is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was used in the construction of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Scheme of the 1950's-1960's. It provides evidence that small measuring equipment used in the construction and the continuing maintenance of the scheme was of the imperial measure and used by construction workers who remained and settled in the town of Mount Beauty and Kiewa Valley long after the construction period. This flexible metallic measuring tape (33 ft in length) is contained in a round circular leather bound container. It has brass fittings (winder and tape guide) and is stitched with heavy grade twine. The tape measure is graduated in feet and inches on one side and yards on the other.
