Handmade book with light green covers made from a cut file holder with brown paper glued on the inside, containing 39 typed (original) sheets of paper giving Instructions or Rules to Motormen. Has five page index, then 34 pages, with 104 rules or instructions, covering Tramcar Equipment (electrical), location of faults, tramcar braking, failure of the mechanical brakes, tramcar emergency braking, automatic braking, automatic electric signals and general instructions for Ballarat. The brown paper appears to have been placed on the outside, as it is cut and glued on the inside of the book. Individual sheets held into the book with a metal clip. On the rear of the book, a small piece of cardboard has been glued over the back of the metal strip. Notes mentions bogie trams, so therefore post 1945. Gives details of route electric signals, use of doors on the trams relevant to the central median strip. On page 4, has hand drawn diagram showing the motors in series and parallel. On page 8 has a hand drawn diagram showing the car lighting circuit arrangements. Has been folded in the middle so as to store in pockets of a coat. Set of notes for the Provincial Tramways Maintenance meeting to be held in Bendigo - 5/5/1958. Has a summary of actions from the 1957 conference, and an Agenda. One page of a multipage document titled "Some notes on the Agenda" dated 28/4/1958 reporting on track condition, life cycle on special work, flange running sections and rail hardness. Second loose sheet follows on from the 1957 conference, - rolling stock tyres, track maintenance - joining of rails and concrete sets. Memo dated 6/6/1958 from the Works Manager to Manager Ballarat branch forwarding a copy of the minutes of the conference held in Bendigo on 5/5/1968. Destination roll used to indicate to passengers the destination or route of the tram. At night the roll was back lit by two light bulbs fitted to the destination box on the tram. Item used in Geelong until 1956. Based on the hand written marking, used on a Pengelley type tram and painted in 1954. This roll is See Reg Item 2906 and 9619 for a smaller side destination roll and 4122 for a wide roll fitted to bogie tram No. 39. The Destinations have a different arrangement to that of item 4122. Item 4122 is an earlier formation based while 9618 is a later format set out to minimize the amount of movement on the roll between the various destinations introduced with changed through routing in 1954. The second image shows two rolls side by side showing the set out. Memo dated 9/11/1960 to the Manager of Ballarat Branch from Manager North Western Region (Bendigo) giving details of Bendigo tram No. 1 transferred to Ballarat. Gives history, mileages, axle numbers, tyre mileage, armatures, and trolley wheels, including fitting date. The tram became Ballarat 37 (the second one) and is now at the Sydney Tramway Museum.
