Equipment - 600 Volt tram line breaker switch - faulty, 1998
Type of switch fitted to Melbourne W class trams for switching the line breaker on or off. This switch controls power to the line breaker activated by the tram controller. Had been fitted to the Restaurant tram No. 3 or Cuthberts 939. Was found to be defective - the power was available to the controller even when switched to the OFF position, that is, failed unsafe. Was replaced 4/11/2015 from a spare. Has the name of the manufacturer on the cover. Sign - Warning Sign - Entering or leaving, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), "Entering or leaving this tram on the wrong side is prohibited", c1920
Demonstrates how the SEC used enamel signs to convey instructions to passengers or to confirm the advice of the conductor and how enamel signs were made.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on an off-white background, titled "Entering or leaving this tram on the wrong side is prohibited". Marks on rear from the enamelling process. The front of the sign has been covered with varnish. See also Reg Item 7118 for a later sign. Document - Instruction, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), "Braking", Nov, 1950
Significant in being a sheet regarding tramcar braking systems and how considered at the time - 1950. No mention of sand in braking technique.Was contained within Reg Item 3519 in which located in the filing cabinet 8/2006. Small typed carbon copy instruction or "Notice to All Traffic Staff" titled "Braking", discussing the names of emergency brake. Notes air braked trams have on emergency brake only - the air brake. Stopping trams electrically is not regarded as brake equipment, and should not be used unless air brake is defective. Dated 24/11/1950. Stapled along the top edge with staples. Two copies of a Carbon typed copy of a technical procedure - 6 pages - "Extract from the 'Proceedings of the Electrical Association of New South Wales' session 1910 - 11" - giving advice on the location of Trolley Wire" giving the guide on how to locate trolley wire on curves and junctions, gives formulas, positioning at frogs, notes regarding various cars and trolley wire height includes notes on cross falls of track, a table of aluminium copper alloys - bending strength and failure modes. Consists of five pages with two blue print drawing. Each page has been scanned the blue print drawings reversed imaged as well. 4768.2 - blue print drawing showing references in the various formulas etc used. 4768.3 - ditto showing tracking for four wheeled and bogie cars and other diagrams for turnouts, frog locations and frog angles. ... cutting added 20/11/2013 "Tram for Melbourne" Newspaper ...Yields information about the operation of Ballarat tram No. 36 in Melbourne to promote Ballarat after the closure of the SEC system.1060 - Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, 15/9/1971 of the loading of tram 36 for running in Melbourne the previous day. Two photos (btm1060i1) shows Stan Lakey and Harry Van Oorschot jacking up the front of the tram and second photo (btm1060i2) shows Doug Wiseman and Bob Prentice on the main body jacks. Caption notes the transport of the tram to Melbourne for a week, advertising the Begonia Festival, Sovereign Hill and the Royal South St. competitions.
