B&W photograph of the one of the ESCo California Combination tramcars at the time of the opening of the service, photographed most likely in Wendouree Parade, near the dept. Shows bracket arm in background, trolley pole and head. Also shows the nature of the road surface at the time, c1905. The print for this photograph made from a copy negative of page 454 of the Australasian, August 19, 1905 in 1993. Print includes caption "ORDINARY CAR, WITH CLOSED CENTRE AND OPEN ENDS" See Reg. Item No. 763. Photo has been mounted onto a styrene card with card sides and Velcro strips on the top edge for display purposes. Mounted Oct. 1993 for the CHHA Exhibition, theme "Made in Australia". 762.1 - added 6/12/2004. Same print with details of source written on the rear. ARHS Vic. Div. Postcard, John Phillips, Doveton St. and Sturt St
B&W print and scanned images of a coloured postcard lent to the BTM by Mr. Norm DePomeroy, Dec. 1997. Image is an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt. Steet. Photo taken soon after opening of the electric trams. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram. Note very similar to item 834, but shadows are different, road surface different and trees have leaves. 1 copy held at 8/98. Postcard posted 25/7/1907. Tram has destination of St. Kilda Road, route number indication "2". Photographed probably between 1913 and 1919 when P&MTT taken over by the M&MTB, though could be later prior to repainting. Yields information about the reconstruction of the depot trackwork during 1935/1936 and the condition of the rails, types of rails and methodsSet of 5 Black and white photo prints from collected negatives of the relaying of the depot fan at the SEC Ballarat depot building, during refurbishment by the SEC during 1935 or 1936. 1351.1 - Wendouree Parade depot junction, track - relaying the 2nd set of points. One track was still useable at the time. Note fences and tools lying around the work area. 1351.2 - laying out the trackwork for two and three roads, note machines and cylinders in background. 1351.3 - looking along No. 2 road out of the depot doors, not connected, possibly taken some time after 1351.2, as the area appears to be cleaned up. 1351.4 - Photo showing the various rail weights for possibly the western rail on No. 3 road and how the fishplates were at the time of the photograph. Not known whether this was the final arrangement, taken looking towards the depot building. 1351.5 - ditto but from the other end - note the damaged flangeway on the depot end rail - horse tram rail? Yields information about the installation of the service pits in the depot during 1935/1936 and the methods usedSet of 2 Black and white photo prints from collected negatives of the construction of service pits and the pit for the wheel grinder at the SEC Ballarat depot building, during refurbishment by the SEC during the 1935/ 1936. 1352.1 - Formwork being set up for the service pit in No. 1 road at the SEC depot. 1352.2 - finished concrete walls for pit and wheel grinder on No. 4 road at the SEC depot, but not yet fully backfilled. No. 12 at the front of the depot and two other single truckers on adjacent tracks. 2nd copy held of 1352.2 ex moveable display boards. Black and white photograph of W3 669 standing (appears to have just arrived) on the entry to Nos. 1 and 3 roads at Essendon depot. The tram has a run number (E48), is showing Essendon Depot. From shadows is late in the afternoon. Date of photo taken based on the series of photos received from the ARHS as being during Oct. and Dec. 1965. On Kodak paper. W3's were not based or attached to Essendon and would thus appear to be a visiting tram, but in service due to the presence of a run number. Photo during the 2nd half of 1965. 1419.1 - Early in the process of pile driving - Bridge tram track has been reduced to single track and the former outbound line is in use for construction purposes. 1419.2 - Roadway west of bridge looking east. On Kodak paper. 1420.1 - Bridge Road looking east at River St. crossover (Hawthorn bridge in distant background). Tram-bus connection at a weekend. Note driver's uniform. Conductor walking to bus with passengers. Conductors often worked through on the bus and next tram at this time to save crews. 1420.2 - Bridge Road at Punt Rd and Hoddle St. intersection looking north west. Reconstruction of curves. Would probably be a Sunday given that new rails are in situ. 1420.3 - Ditto - looking south east 1420.4 - looking south east 1420.5 - looking east - replacement bus service passing with old cable winding house in the background.
