Functional object - Conductors Bell, Conductors Bell Tramcar No. 34
The bell from the final tram, Tram No. 34, to run on Lydiard Street North in 1971. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars. A reminder of the network of trams that existed in Ballarat. Brass Conductor Communication Bell consisting of cast frame, bell pull part, one nut to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Displayed in wooden frame with brass plaque. Stamped at one end with "48" "1". Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, 1887?
Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. An album of photographs with some postcards compiled by Wal Jack, a Ballarat tram and rail enthusiast of Bendigo and Geelong tram photographs. Some photographs are duplicated in the Museum's holdings.Has a strong association with Wal Jack and tramway developments until 1964. Given their extent are of particular significance to the Museum and the Provincial tramways. Features Bendigo and Geelong tramcars. Black binder cloth covered folder, two brass screw binders with grey paper inside covers holding some 40 grey colour foolscap size sheets of card on which photos have been mounted using photo corners so various types, captions in blue or black ink. Demonstrates how the SEC used enamel signs to convey instructions to passengers or to confirm the advice of the conductor and how enamel signs were made.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on an off-white background, titled "Entering or leaving this tram on the wrong side is prohibited".
