Copy given to Sherbrooke Centenary Committee in 1989 by Hermon family. -

‘Reno’, stood on the east side of St John’s Parade. Its earliest recorded owner was the architect Samuel Cocking who lived there from c.1865 until his death in 1888. The original landholding was bordered by Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road, Wellington Street, and Charles Street. The southern portion of this land included a fine orchard, with many imported trees. The old summer house, at first in the orchard, was later removed to the house garden. The MMBW Detail Plan No.1576 (1904) shows the remaining portion of the original land holding, including a semi-circular pathway at the front, and garden features such as an aviary, a fountain and grotto, and a fernery. The garden including rare plants supplied by Baron Von Mueller, surrounds the cottage in a tangled frenzy. Despite a ‘local significance’ classification by the National Trust, the house was demolished in 1977.Partial view, north side of the weatherboard cottage in St John's Parade, Kew, known as 'Reno' (demolished 1977). David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. Electoral roll details: 1919 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. The Deakin, Mair and Young families had many connections with Mont Albert and Surrey Hills.A sepia photo of a girl bending towards a calf feeding from a bucket with a man overlooking. There are 6 calves altogether feeding from a small trough and 2 buckets. In the background is an Edwardian timber house with a brick chimney and a corrugated iron roof. There is a centrally positioned (?) rear door with windows either side. There is a tank to the left of the house, which is enclosed within a post and wire fence. The surroundings look very bare.On the rear in black ink: "Feeding time for the / calves at Derrinallum / B Mair / 20 Barton St / Surrey Hills / E10." Writing may be that of Lily Mair. This late 19th century maritime lamp is an example of lighting on ships, wharfs and other outside areas around docks and shipyards as well as on vessels.Lamp; grass and glass, with flat metal back and three glass windows. Has metal handle and wood hand piece. A brass lug on the back makes provision for attaching to a socket on a wall. The chimney lid flips upwards. The right-side door frame has a sliding latch, and the edge behind has a sliding panel to allow air flow. The former Christopher Crisp residence was constructed in 1868 by William Watson, one of the members of the Bacchus Marsh Express printing company which took over the management of The Express after the first edition, 7 July 1866, was published by its founder, George Lane, a book binder. This syndicate failed after three months and the ownership was then taken over by Christopher Crisp, a compositor working for the company. Crisp remained the editor from 1866 to his death in 1915, when he was succeeded by his son, also called Christopher Crisp, and later by his grandson. Under the Crisp family leadership, The Express widened its readership and was subscribed to by influential men and public servants in Melbourne. (Heritage Victoria Council. Places. Entry no. 45.)Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The photograph is of a single-storey cottage of rendered brick and sandstone with a shingled roof of slate tiles and ornate concave verandah. A chimney stands at either end of the house. A carved barge board decorates the northern end of the hip roof. A skillion with windows and a chimney adjoins the rear of the cottage. The front facade is symmetrical with two sash windows placed either side of the central door. A wire fence runs along the front of the cottage. Standing at the gate is a formally dressed gentleman wearing a top hat. A young child is standing on the road. This child is possibly Christopher Crisp, Jnr., who later took over the role of editor of the Bacchus Marsh Express in 1915 on the death of his father. This manuscript was the brain child of German, Adolf Wilke, Afrika Korp, Prisoner of War. In a cell in Camp 13 he watched smoke from a chimney of the Recreation Hall where his mates were discussing a play. The verses describe various members of the group and their activities. The cartoonist was Count Hans Wolter van Gruenewaldt, a German mining engineer who escaped internment in South Africa, ending as a prisoner in Camp 13. This is a copy of the original. Only 3 copies of the original were made by Gerry von Gruenewaldt - one for Adolf Wilke, one for Gus Pohlig and one for himself. Gerry had a photographed copy made, printed and bound and donated it to the Tatura Museum.Cream coloured card front and back, bound together with a black multi ring binder. CEMA Art Collection Noted that this work was sent by Caltex in exchange for the winner of the 1973 Caltex Prize, which was part of the Portland Art Society Art Prize. The exchanged work was a print by Greg Moncrieff. Included in the 1999 "Salvage" Exhibition at CEMA Arts Centre.The painting depicts the Sydney Opera House in shades of blue and brown. In the foreground to the left is the brown roof of a building with four red chimneys. In front of these two buildings is an elevated road. Seperating the road from the Opera House is a body of water completed in shades of cream and white. The shadow of the Opera House on the water's surface is completed in shades of blue and green. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. June rescued all the photos of properties listed for sale from the office and placed them into the custody of the BHS.' Black and white original photograph mounted on grey board.
