This bottle was made by the Whitall Tatum Glass Company in New Jersey, U.S.A This company operated from 1806 to 1938. The bottle was used by Harry London in his Warrnambool pharmacy. Born in England, Harry London arrived in Victoria in 1883 and worked as a chemist in Ballarat and Euroa. In 1891 he went back to England where he studied dentistry. In 1891 he came to Warrnambool where he bought the pharmacy business of the late William Nettleton. He occupied the Nettleton building in Liebig Street (95 Liebig Street today) until 1896 when he erected new premises at the south west corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. In 1896 London was the only Warrnambool chemist using a Pasteur filter to make up his prescriptions. In his dentistry business he used gas, chloroform and cocaine as anaesthetics. The making of dentures was his speciality. In 1904 London was the owner of the only set of Rontgen X Ray apparatus in Warrnambool. In 1905 his shop was the first in Warrnambool to establish electric lighting. This bottle is of importance as it is one of the few items we have associated with the prominent Warrnambool chemist, Harry London. It is comparatively rare so it is of some local significance. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular base with curved ledges, a circular neck and a circular moulded top. There is no stopper and the top is badly chipped. The name of the chemist is embossed on the front in an indent in the glass. ‘H. This bottle of liquid floor polish was manufactured before 1960(taken over by Wattyl) in a period when most of the floors in high traffic areas were covered in linoleum. Most of the floors using this product during this period would have been kitchens and laundries. During this period the cleanliness of the kitchen, hallways and eateries had to appear clean (cleanliness was a sign of a bacteria free area). This was a priority for kitchens, mess areas(SEC Hydro Scheme facilities) and connecting walkways. The cleanliness attitude was enhanced in the rural areas due to the "dirty" farm work not impinging upon the residential home.When Mount Beauty was first inhabited all the residential and worker's facilities were a prime area for linoleum floor surfaces. The liquid floor polish was in great demand, "a polished floor is a clean floor".This bottle of liquid floor polish is very significant to the Kiewa Valley, not only that it covers the floors of every home and residential barracks of the first major development of a "town" now known as Mount Beauty but also it demonstrates that the "cleanliness" approach of early Australians living areas in the rural regions was "on par" with its city cousins. It is the smaller types of mores that underlie the "mushrooming" cultural and psyche "wholeness" of an ever expanding Australian culture.This brown opaque glass bottle with an oblong shape has a blue coloured "screw on" cap. It has a "wrap around" label glued firmly on the bottle and covers the front and sides.On the front main label under a red line, "SPARTAN" underneath in smaller print "For use on" below this, "LINOLEUM, RUBBER, COMPOSITION AND HARDWOOD FLOORS" besides this is an encircled Trade Mark of a "Spartan Warrior holding a spear and shield" these word follow the curviture of the circle and are below it "TRADE MARK REGISTERED" Below this are "SUPER FLOOR GLOSS" to the left in very small print "Nett Contents 16 Fluid Ounces". Below this on a blue background and in white print"LIQUID FLOOR WAX WATER REPELLENT". The making of cordials and aerated waters was an important industry in Warrnambool from the time of the first settlement up to the 1980s. John Rowley was a prominent producer of aerated waters and cordials from 1868 to his death in 1893 (the Warrnambool Steam Aerated Works). He was known for his originality in the production of soft drinks and produced 20 varieties of drinks, including his own Henneberry Wine and Lime Fruit Champagne, both non-alcoholic. In the 1870s he was producing 600 dozen bottles a day and in the 1880s his cordial factory occupied half an acre of land and employed 13 people. He won many awards for his products at local Agricultural Shows. Warrnambool cordial bottles are of considerable significance as examples of an important industry now gone. Rowley is a significant person in the history of 19th century Warrnambool industries and Rowley bottles are of considerable importance, especially this one, made for efferverscent drinks. This is a heavy glass bottle (no stopper) possibly used for hop bitters or ginger wine or some contents that had high efferverscent qualities. The bottle has a heavy indented base. Dr. Allen De Vilbiss (1841-1917) of Toledo, Ohio, developed his first atomiser around 1887. This device was designed to allow for dissolving cocaine, as a local anaesthetic agent, in oil, and spraying into the nose and throat. In the early to mid 20th Century, The DeVilbiss Company began making perfume atomisers instead of medical ones. This bottle was used in the pharmacy business of H.O.Wilkinson. He had a chemist’s shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool (number 119 Liebig Street today) early in the 20th century. The dates found for this business are from 1906 to 1914. Wilkinson also had pharmacies in Melbourne and Maryborough. His cough mixture, Wilkinson’s Pectorine, selling at two shillings and sixpence a bottle, was advertised as ‘the finest preparation for the cure of stubborn coughs and colds’. This bottle is of considerable interest as it is one of the few items in our collection associated with an early 20th century Warrnambool chemist, H.O.Wilkinson. These bottles came from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Charles and Frederick Flett. They were sold under the name of Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd. This business was first established in the 1920s by Joseph Lescai who had a fruit shop in Fairy Street, Warrnambool (his brother James also had a fruit shop in Liebig Street). Joseph Lescai began to make cordials and moved his business to another location in Fairy Street. His cordial business was sold to a company of local businessmen who employed a cordial maker. In the 1930sThomas Hill then purchased this business, followed by the Flett brothers’ purchase in the 1940s. Charles and Frederick Flett, the sons of William Flett, a Timor Street tinsmith, also operated their father’s plumbing business for some time. In the 1960s Frederick Flett, the surviving brother, sold the Warrnambool Cordials business to Thomas McKenzie.These bottles are of interest because they are examples of the soft drinks bottles sold by the Flett brothers in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The Warrnambool Cordials business was a prominent one in Warrnambool for many years. These are two glass bottles with a round base and body and rounded neck with a moulded glass opening at the top. The stoppers are missing. Moonee Valley Cordial company was established in 1890 by John Dunne. In 1898 they produced Horonda, an alcohol free beer, based on the herb horehound. Sir Frederic W. Hewitt (1857-1916), an accomplished and well respected English anesthesiologist, was an expert in the function and use of the Clover Ether Inhaler. In 1901, Hewitt described his modification of the Clover Inhaler. Often referred to as the Hewitt Wide-Bore Inhaler, Dr. Hewitt introduced changes in order to make it easier to breathe through the device and improve the ventilation of oxygen and carbon dioxide. In 1901, Hewitt was recruited to anesthetize King Edward VII for emergency abdominal surgery. This was just a day or so before the new King was to be coronated. He recovered well, and Hewitt became the first anesthesiologist ever to be knighted. (Source: Wood Library Museum)Tall black round topped box with brass hooks at the sides and brass hinges at rear. There is a brown fabric handle on the top. The box has red padding inside the lid and red lining inside the base and sides. There is a round section in the base of the box for holding the round clear glass bottle for ether. There is also a ellipse-shaped metal inhaler on small metal base with a thin metal handle and pipe with bakelite plug attached via a small metal chain.
