The Moorabbin council meeting on 10 October 1994 marked 60 years since Moorabbin was declared a city. The Sons of Temperance was founded in New York in 1842 and brought to New South Wales by the Baptist minister, Dr William Hobbs, a short time later. Division, or local branches, grew quickly so that in October 1864, a provisional Grand Division was formed with a commitment to spread the word on temperance throughout the country, and the advantages gained by joining a temperance benefit society. It was reported that by 1869, in New South Wales, there was a National Division, two Grand Divisions, and one hundred and seven Divisions, with a total membership of 5970. While a distinct part of the temperance movement, the Sons of Temperance was also a 'friendly society'. Friendly societies were fraternal organisations established to assist members and their families cope with unemployment, sickness and death. No government unemployment or hospital benefits were available to individuals when the societies were initially formed. In each society, members contributed financially to a common fund which could be drawn upon in times of need. In 1868, members of the Church of Christ, Cheltenham, initiated a meeting to form a Division of the Sons of Temperance, which was subsequently called Star of Moorabbin Division, No 29. The meeting was held at the Cheltenham Temperance Hall on 30 September, with office bearers appointed and the larger membership acknowledged.This minute book records the minutes of the meetings of the Star of Moorabbin Division of the Sons of Temperance. It also records the first office holders. The minutes of the Southport Widows' Club from 1988 to 1994. South Port was a widows' club was made up of widows from South Melbourne and Port Melbourne. At one stage it had been called Parks Legacy Club. The pages show that each meeting started with a minute silence in memory of their husbands. Also inside the front cover is The Legacy Widows' prayer that the widows would use. 'Let us be kind to one another and see in each other the best that we can find. There is so much sadness in the world and so many lives are dependant on us for brightness. Lord keep us brave. Help us to be kind. Amen. First committee meeting on 20 April 1956 to be held to get the project of writing a biography of Sir Stanley Savige under way. John Hetherington was selected as the author for a fee of one thousand pounds, but indicated that he would not be available to begin until the end of the year and expected the writing to take 12 months. The minutes note that Sir Stanley Savige's grandson, Stanley G. Waters, was born on the eve of the meeting. See also 00635 for a full list of committee members. It is interesting to note that the meeting took place at the Melbourne Town Hall, and was attended by the Lord Mayor (Sir Frank Selleck), who arrived late. What seems to be the final meeting of the committee formed to publish a biography of Sir Stanley Savige, including a statement of receipts and payments. 3000 copies of the book were accounted for, including 2237 actual sales. A balance of 489 pounds and twopence was authorised to be handed over to the Hon. Treasurer of the Sir Stanley Savige Fund. The Ocean Grove RVIB Auxiliary formed on July 31, 1944. This collection of papers includes the minute books from 1944 until 2002 and printed minutes from 2002 to the conclusion of the Auxiliiary in 2004. The papers include newspaper clippings, correspondence, secretary and annual reports, 1999-2005 syllabus (list of events), lists of office bearers and balance sheets. A signboard for the Auxiliary's kiosk in 1951, a poem from the last President Dot Whitehead and the acknowledgement letter from RVIB regarding the Auxiliary's final donation and decision to conclude are also here.
