Dwight James Baum is an American architect. He was born in 1886 in Newville, New York. As a young man, Baum moved to Syracuse. In 1909, he graduated from Syracuse University with an architecture degree. He worked for Boring and Tilton and Sanford White which are well known Architecture firms in America. Around 1912, he started his own residential design firm. During the 1920s, Baum designed a significant buildings and several houses in Sarasota, Tampa, Terrace, Temple and Florida all in the Mediterranean Revival Style such as the Ringlings dubbed Cà d'Zan, which is now known as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. In 1923-1924, he also designed Sunset Hill for Mrs. Eugene D. Stocker at Warren, New York which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. During the Depression Baum became involved with Good Housekeeping Magazine as consulting architect, and as designer of their building exhibit at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. His later work includes Hendricks Memorial Chapel at Syracuse University, with John Russell Pope in 1929–1930 and the pedestal for V. Renzo Baldi's statue of Columbus in the city's Columbus Circle. The last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre presented by E J Carroll. The theatre was managed by Frank Talbot Pty Ltd during his long lease of the theatre following his major renovations when Henry White the architect built an intimate theatre inside the old Athenaeum Hall. In addition to musical accompaniment for the film, the orchestra, and sometimes singers entertained audiences before the films commenced and during interval. Filmed on location in the jungles of Siam (Thailand). Programs, printed for early films at the Athenaeum Theatre provided the full program for the audience in the centre pages and gave background information about the story and the actors. Chang was the last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre before the Jazz Singer changed cinema going for ever with the introduction of both vocal and musical sound. From 1955 Alan Marshall's home was a bungalow at the rear of his sister's house at Eltham. The first bungalow burnt down. Its replacement shown here still stands. In March 2020 the property was sold. It was last sold previously in November 1982. No mention was made in the advertising regarding the heritage protected bungalow in the rear yard and advertising material presented it as having future potential to develop STCA (Subject To Council Approval). Concerned local members of the community alerted to EDHS to the pending upcoming sale and Council was also alerted to the sale and the potential risk presented to the heritage protected bungalow. In 2021 an updated amendment, C133nill, was made to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme in response to a planning application to develop the property following its sale. The Minster of Planning approved and gazetted the Amendment. Gazettal occurred on 25th November 2021. A copy of the gazetted Amendment is available on website of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning at www.planning.vic.gov.au/schemes-and-amendments/browse-amendments.
