The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Committee, also known as The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Society, also known as the Friends of the Shillinglaw Cottage collated and published a community cookbook "Flavour of Eltham", first published in 1964 to raise funds for the preservation and re-location of this historical cottage in Eltham. Petrol rationing was gazetted in May 1941. Australia's lack of fuel storage options and the diversion of tankers bringing fuel here forced the government to begin rationing. Initially it was proposed that consumption should be reduced by 50% but this was modified to 1/3 reduction. People had to apply for a petrol licence and this was then used to obtain ration coupons. Initially coupons were issued on a 6 monthly basis but this was reduced to 2 monthly and allowed people roughly 2000 gallons per year. Coupons allowed for 1, 2, 5, 10, 44 and 100 gallon amounts depending on need. eg. private, commercial, farm use. Rationing was strictly enforced until 1942 but remained in effect until 1950.WWII Fuel Ration Cards: A sheet consisting of 9 tickets with perforations for individual use. Cream back ground with pink print. The top has a leaf design with "Commonwealth of Australia" written across the top. Underneath is "Motor Spirit Ration Ticket" with the Commonwealth emblem in the middle. The ticket is for 1 One Gallon Valid only until 31st July 1947 and is not transferable. The 30mm cartridge was used in British ADEN aerial machine guns. Introduced in the UK in 1954. The ADEN 30mm guns were used in Australian C.A.C.SABRE fighter jets between 1953 and 1965. The A/P variant shell had a muzzle velocity of 2610 feet/sec. There were two ADEN M/Gs on a C.A.C. SABRE..1) 30mm Projectile. This has an aluminium nose cone. The projectile is probably armour piercing. .2) Brass case. This has a double flanged base..1 Projectile, no markings. .2 Shell case. A suggested speech to be used when a President of Melbourne Legacy attends the inauguration of a widows' club. It includes the installation of the Widows' Club first president. It was written in 1984 and used at the opening of at least three widows' clubs, in Sale, Beaumaris and Camberwell. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. This is a needle book containing needles. It appears that the Army and Navy Needle books were not issued to soldiers or sailors but were made for home use in the Western World - Europe, America and presumably Australia. They were made mainly in Germany and some were made in Japan but were not sold in wartime. They were sold before and after World War Two and often featured images of well-known ships of the day. This folder has images of the Europa and the Bremen, two ships made in Germany which belonged to the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line (N.D.L.) and which were launched in the late 1920s. They were the two most advanced high speed steam turbine ocean liners of their day. The Bremen was gutted by fire in 1941. The Europa was captured by the Allies in 1945 and used as a troopship, then it went to France where it was became an ocean liner named Liberte. It was scrapped in 1963. The newspaper cutting tells of a presentation by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill to Private Les Lawlor on his embarking for overseas service. It is not known to which war the cutting refers and no reference can be found to Private Les Lawlor. No connection between the two items (needle book and cutting) has been established but they have always been together in our collection. The needle book is of social significance but has no known local provenance. The cutting contains information suitable for our files.1 This is a piece of thickened paper folded in two to make a folder containing four packets of needles. The folder is green with two images of ships on the back and the front. The images are multi-coloured and have an ornamental edging. The needles of different sizes are contained in black paper folded four times to enclose the needles (13 still in the folded paper – all rusty). It appears one needle packet may be missing. .2 This is a cutting from a newspaper regarding a soldier leaving for overseas military service. 1. Lords Raceway trotting track was formally opened in November 1954 by Mr. Galvin the Trotting Club's Chief Secretary. 2. Clothes/cloth rationing was in place from June 1942 till June 1948. Adults were allowed 112 clothing coupons per year. A lady's dress used 12 coupons, a pair of socks 4 coupons, and a man's suit used 38 coupons. Other items affected by rationing were butter, tea, sugar, eggs, tobacco, petrol and Meat. Butter and tea were rationed until 1950. 3. Marong Catholic Church had its foundation stone laid in 1876, and the first services were held in1877. The church is now closed.1. An unsuccessful attempt was made to set up a silkworm industry at Mt Alexander, to be an occupation for ladies of the district as well as to introduce the silk industry to Victoria. An attempt by women to enter the business world was beaten by difficulties: (1). Road access to the property (2). Heavy frost damage to mulberry plants. (3). Disease of silkworms. (4). Lack of quantity of leaves. (5) drought and rabbits. Experiments proved silk harvested and woven was superior to overseas products, but the venture was defeated by the climate and the surviving trees were relocated to Corowa NSWA relic of the far-sighted venture by the Victorian Ladies Sericulture Co, promoted by the charismatic Mrs Bladen Neill , who was anxious to generate employment opportunities for women..A dead branch from a mulberry tree grown at Sericulture Farm, Mt Alexander, in the early 1870s. This long limb's bark has cracked with age, forming a pattern of brown cracks. Remnants of smaller branch axilla are clearly visible. An inscription on paper is pasted around the branchTyped: "Part of a limb of a mulberry tree from the Sericulture Farm on Mt Alexander which was started by Mrs Bladen-Neill in early 1870s, finally closing in 1878.
