Harry Atkin No VX21935 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 4.6.40 age 33 years. He served in 2/2nd Pioneer Batt as part of the 7th Div AIF. Returning from the Middle East they landed in Java with what was to be called “Black Force” with other units. The Japanese invaded on 28.2.42 but were ordered to lay down their arms a day after the Dutch surrendered on March 8. In the 2nd 2nd Pioneers 865 were taken POW of which 258 died in captivity. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was raised at Broadmeadows Camp in 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Sinai, Palestine, Transjordan and Syria. At Gallipoli the regiment took part in the ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 and suffered horrendous casualties including the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White. Following the evacuation the regiment was brought up to full strength under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC and went on the participate in all the major actions of the desert campaign culminating in the capitulation of Turkey in October 1918. The regiment was in reserve at Beersheba and came under air attack resulting in the death of Lieutenant Colonel Maygar. Allied military badges collected during the Great War 1914 to 1918 by Private (Shoeing Smith) John BLAIKIE 2341 who was born at Wangaratta. He was a Blacksmith and at the age of 42 enlisted on May 28 1915. He embarked on August 10 1915 and served with the 14th Battalion. He returned to Australia in January 1918 and discharged as medically unfit on April 10 1918.
