Booklet - Document, Remembrance Day Silence : Proposed Memorial to Edward George Honey, Australian Journalist. Executives Committee's Report, 1964
An interesting document outlining the evolution of the tradition of pausing in silence for remembrance on 11 November each year. The account outlines how King George V decreed a two minute silence be held at the first anniversary of the Armistice - originally referred to as Peace Day. The events included a letter written by Edward George Honey, an Australian journalist, proposing the idea on 8 May 1919. In it part of it says: "Should not this be the spirit of at least a fragment of our Peace Day? Communion with the Glorious Dead who won us Peace, and from the communion new strength, hope and faith in the morrow, Church services, too, if you will, but in the street, the home, the theatre, anywhere, indeed, where Englishmen and their women chance to be, surely this five minutes of bitter-sweet silence there will be service enough. Before and afterwards, sing and make merry as we will. Of one thing, I am quite certain, and the tis that our songs will take a deeper, truer note after those five minutes of remembrance We will have gathered from them strength for the morrow. God knows we need it!" The document was produced by a committee that was proposing a memorial to Edward Honey to record his role. It was forwarded too H.G. Brain, presumably a Legatee who could bring this information to Legacy's attention. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01212).A record of a committee approaching Legacy about a memorial to the man who suggested the adoption of silence as a form of remembrance in 1919. Also there was an effort to record historical events by the "Archive Committee" which collected this and other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01212)A thirteen page report typed on buff paper in a dark brown card cover, on a proposed memorial to Edward Honey. Also a letter dated 20 March 1964 from the Memorial Committee to Mr H G Brain that accompanied the report.Handwritten 'S13' in red pen on top left of of the letter which is signed Roy Gordon in blue ink. memorial, remembrance day -

Document, Guest of Honour today - Colonel Sir Edward Dunlop, Kt., C.M.G., O.B.E, 02/08/1977
Photocopy of brief biographical notes in respect of the guest of honour, Colonel Sir Edward Dunlop at a Legacy meeting. Legatees met regularly and usually had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The requirement to be a guest of honour at a Legacy meeting is highlighted in purple. It says: A Guest of honour shall be an individual who by reason of his services to the community and/or the ex-servicemen and his dependants, is unanimously deemed by the Board of Management to be worth of being so described". In this case Sir Edward (Weary) Dunlop was a speaker and his brief biography was included in this Bulletin.A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subects spoken on were many and varied. World War 1 Memorial Plaque, Royal Arsenal Woolich
The WW1 Memorial Plaque - also known as the Death Penny or Dead Mans Penny - was awarded to personnel killed as a result of war. The Plaque was designed by Edward Carter Preston, Liverpool, United Kingdom. Over 1.3 Million World War One Memorial Plaques were issued. Plaques were awarded to the next of kin of those killed in action and were accompanied by a memorial scroll from the King. They came to be known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the much smaller penny coin which itself had a diameter of only 1.215 inches (30.9 mm). This WW1 Memorial plaque was awarded in the memory of 3638 Edward James Thompson. He served as a Private in the 60th Australian Infantry Battalion and was killed in France on 19 July 1916. Photograph, Sir Edward Dunlop, 1986
A large poster of Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop, AC, CMG, OBE (12 July 1907 – 2 July 1993). He was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. He was involved with Legacy on numerous occasions - including a dinner with Clive James in 1993.When he passed away in 1993 there was a tribute in the Answer. Unknown when the photo was taken - perhaps the 1940s (Note; the colour patch on the upper arm.) Photo has possibly been taken on Anzac Day. (Note; Anzac Day badge on left lapel of battle dress jacket and sprig of rosemary rising above decorations pinned on right chest of battle dress jacket.). The Technical Bookshop were tenants in the shopfront premises of Legacy House for many years. This could have been advertising material for Weary Dunlops War Diaries which were published by Penguin in 1986, presumably the poster was given to Legacy in December 1990 when no longer required in store. This shows the Technical Bookshop had a good relationship with Legacy and understood the connection between Weary Dunlop and Legacy.Coloured photo of Sir (Ernest) Edward "Weary" Dunlop that was used to promote a book about him. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. The Corps of Commissionaires was established in Australia in New South Wales in 1939 and became based in Victoria in 1946. There are Corps members in all states in Australia from all three Australian military services. Our members range from World War 2 veterans through all conflicts to Timor and Peacekeepers. The Corps is currently an ex-service, welfare and philanthropic organisation that is located at the Veterans Centre in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Victoria." Photograph, Legacy Appeal 1992 - Tug of war
Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop appears to be pinning a badge on ex-footballer Ron Barassi. It was in the Melbourne City square, there is a Legacy Banner behind them. A tug of war held in Melbourne City Square to promote Legacy Week in 1992. Other photos at 01797 mentions it was a Legacy team against a media team. Ron Barassi can be seen at the end of the rope of the Legacy team. The judge appears to be Sir Weary Dunlop. Another photo shows a staff member (Susie Howard?) and radio personalities also competing - possibly the Fox FM crew that helped in other events. Ron Barassi was a Legacy Boy after losing his father and has helped promote Legacy many times at events. Weary Dunlop has also been active in promoting Legacy and participating in Legacy events. Ron Barassi's father, Corporal Ronald James Barassi, was killed in action at Tobruk in 1941, aged 27.A record of some important personalities giving their time to promote Legacy in 1992.Black and white photo of Weary Dunlop and Ron Barassi4-18 in blue pen and P7 in pencil on reverse.events, legacy promotion, legacy week, dunlop, ron barassi -

Photograph - Widows function, Widows Lunch, May 1993
Photo of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop meeting widows he was a guest speaker for the Heidelberg Widows Club when they were celebrating their 10th Anniversary in May. This photo featured in the July edition of The Answer with the unfortunate footnote that Sir Edward had passed away on the 2nd July. "Our picture shows the gentlemanly Sir Edward charming the ladies. All were sad to learn of Sir Edward's death on 2nd July 1993." Another article in the September edition of The Answer was a touching tribute to Sir Edward by a legacy widow Dorothy Madigan: Sir Edward was so strong and tall, in body and in mind Yet gentle, too, he saw sick through their dying days in Thailand. This was the doctor's greatest challenge when all seemed hopeless and lost To improvise a theatre, and operate; for himself, at such a cost. Threatened with execution his face slapped many a time In spite of leg covered with ulcers he carried on, he carried on. And many an ex POW, will shed a tear today. Photograph, The Changi Violin
A photo of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop holding the violin that is part of Melbourne Legacy's collection (see 00080). Unsure when this photo was taken. Background: This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. He was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was more than one concert party in Changi as indicated on the rear of the violin. The details of the Dutch, British and American Concert Parties scratched in to the varnish. There are some well-known names scratched into the violin including: The English author and cartoonist, Ronald Searle; Australian entertainer, Frank Rich; and Australian Author, Russell Braddon Mr Arnel died in 1982 and the violin was presented to Melbourne Legacy for preservation, safe keeping and display.A record of relationship of Weary Dunlop with Legacy.Black and white photo of Sir Weary Dunlop with the Changi violinchangi violin, dunlop
