Combing removes the short or broken fibres and draws out the long fibres into even strands suitable for spinning. The process is necessary to produce long and soft strands needed for worsted yarn. These machines remove the short fibres and blend the remaining long fibres together to form the top. The short fibres that are removed, known as the noil, are used in the woollen system. The long fibres are drawn together, ready for spinning. To retain as many of the valuable long fibres as possible, a skilled operator always needed to be on duty in the factory to precisely set the machine. Machine has been completely rebuilt and set up by Nick Sokolov of Comb Research and Development with the help of Bruce Hill and others. This machine uses a series of combs attached to bars that move with increasing speed away from a starting point. This draws-out and aligns the wool fibres to produce a gilled top. The gilling process is also used in other positions along the worsted production line. A gill box draws and combs the fibres prior to spinning. Donor, Howard, became interesed in photography through his father who had Kodak camera and a home development kit. Could adjust size. In school Howard formed a camera club (aged 16). An Agfamatic 2008 110film camera. Pocket automatic with Flip Flash, a fixed focus colour Agno - f9.2/26 mm lens. It uses two shutters (close up and landscape) with a flash and daylight setting. Fitted with a wrist chain and a leather carry case. It has a partly exposed film in it. It is metal with a brushed chrome finish and imitation leather on parts. History prior to 1946 unknown. Camera etc was purchased by the donor in 1946 from Herbert Small Camera Supply then in Elizabeth Street Melbourne. Donor used camera regularly until recent years.'Etue' folding camera with accessories (camera, case, 3 negative containers in a imitation leather & cardboard container) and an additional slide tray. Camera can be used with glass plates, cut negative film and film packs. When camera is opened the lens, bellows etc slide into position. The whole lot slides on a rail system and can be locked in the position required. Item to be photographed can be viewed in a viewfinder which can be turned to a horizontal or vertical plane. In the viewfinder has a small bubble level. It includes an oblong chrome wire which is used to set the minimum distance from lens to object.|Camera is of steel covered and is covered with leather with a carrying handle. provision is made in the back to carry a film slide in a small envelope style pocket|Camera is made by Kamera Werkstatten of Dresden c1920.|It has a 'Zeiss Tessar' 1:4.5 lens of 10.5 cm focal length. Shutter is a 'Compur' with speeds of 1 to 1/250th of a second with Bulb and Time. It also has a delayed action feature. The camera was used locally by the donorBlack electronic Agfa Optima camera with sensor and flash in a black vinyl carry zippered carry case. The lens is set in a recessed surround containing a light meter. The surround can be turned to indicate distance for personal, group and scene photos. The lens is described as Alpha Paratronic Dir Solitar 1.2/40. The back opens to contain the film. The orange button is to activate the flash, which folds down to the lens.photography, cameras

All items belonged to Harold Victor Allen who worked for Colonial Gas Association Ltd. Firstly at Footscray and then Box Hill in the 1960's. Retired in 1971. Born in Ballarat in 1906. Apprenticed and worked there till 1945, then moved to Footscray. The Mitcham Chess Club was established in 1970 and disbanded Dec-1976. The Nunawading Chess Club reformed from Mitcham Club Jan-1977 and disbanded permanently in 1998. It operated from The Avenue Neighbourhood House, Blackburn.Wooden rectangular box sitting on rectangular base. The box contains two timing windup clocks used to time chess games.
