Extract from Bendigo Advertiser, January 4th 1864 (Severe Storm) with attached typed note stating that this extract found in relation to the ''heavy rain fall in February last'' (no date! - but about ''a century ago'). Mention in this note that the hotel mentioned - Costello's Axe Creek Bridge Hotel may have been later renamed The Perseverence (sic). Field of white crosses beside Bendigo RSL, placed to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives during WW1. Crosses were placed in the lawn by descendants ( if possible ) of those killed. Another inclusion written in pencil states ' Bendigo Gaol about 1880. Granite from Big Hill was used to construct the cell blocks about 1860. Prisioners did not have heating, beds, seats or eating utensils. A public meeting in 1862 called for the debtor's quarters at the gaol to be lit with gas, handsomely furnished throughout and that inmates be provided with a bottle of wine, one bottle of brandy daily and tobacco and pipes availabe at liberty.
