Anthony PELCHEN (1960- ) Born Horsham Anthony Pelchen studied economics at Monash University and a decade later painting at the Victorian College of the Arts. Since 1992 he has exhibited widely in artist-run, institutional and alternative spaces in Melbourne, with projects in Japan and Denmark. He has been included in various national surveys of drawing and painting and undertaken residencies in Australia. In 2008/9 he was included in Drought – Cross Cultural Collaborations, presenting cross media work at the NGV/ACMI/ Federation Square. In July 2010 he was awarded an Asialink residency in Malaysia. Marcus WILLS (1972 - ) Born Kaniva, Victoria Marcus Wills is a figurative realist painter who completed an Advanced Certificate of Art and Design between 1989 and 1991 at the Wimmera Community College of TAFE (now Federation University Australia's Horsham Campus). He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1995. he won the second Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 1999. In 2006 Marcus Wills won the Archibald Prize for his painting of 'The Paul Juraszek Monolith', based on an engraving by Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder. In 2015 and 2016 Marcus Wills has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize. Phil BERRY (1963 - ) Born Ballarat Completing a Master of Arts at the University of Ballarat (now Federation) in 2012, he workes as a sessional staff member for the Arts Academy. Artist Phil Berry recalled ‘As a child I spent the majority of my holidays at my uncle and auntie’s. Uncle Jack was a prisoner of War at Changi during World War 2. Repatriated to Australia he was emaciated and clutched his prize possession, an old spoon. Part of his daily life during the extreme hardship of the camp, the spoon was a symbol of his survival, a constant in extreme uncertainty.’ ‘Home again Jack married, started a family and embraced peace. A kind and gentle man, I was fortunate to have known him. The coming of peace had given back what war had nearly taken away.’ This item won the Lucato Peace Prize and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Lainey BEAVIS (1994- ) Born Portland Lainey Beavis completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) at the Federation University Arts Academy in 2015. She won the 2015 Art Acquisition Award. Jeff WOODGER Born Bendigo, Victoria Jeff studied art at La Trobe University in 1986, and a Graduate Diploma in teaching in 1989. He worked as a teacher from 1990 to 1998. In 1994 Jeff was awarded a Master of Arts from La Trobe University. He then studied at the prestigious Slade School, London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Jeff Woodger completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Art) at University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2006. This work was part of the exhibition assessment for this study. Jeff Woodger has lived and worked in Japan regularly since 1994. His passion is to paint post romantic landscapes in the classical style which are deeply inspired by many of the seventeenth century greats such as Claude Lorraine and Salvator Rosa. Michelle ZUCCOLO Born Orbost, Victoria Between 2004 and 2007 Michelle Zuccolo undertook a Master of Arts, (Visual Arts part-time by research) at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University Australia). Her BA (Fine Art) was awarded by the Victoria College of Art and Design, and she has a DipEd from Melbourne College of Advanced Education. Michelle Zuccolo's work is underpinned by an interest in the human psyche, expressed in related portraiture paintings, life drawing and sculpture.This work was a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize, and she won the 2021 $3,000 Local Art Prize for the painting Habitat (2020), which raises questions about interactions between introduced and native species. During that time he formed the Ballarat Artist’s Society, a group that sponsored art and invited modernist artists to visit Ballarat to speak to students and the public. Neville Mirvane BUNNING (1902-1990) During World War Two Neville Bunning served with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He was an Art Teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) from 05 February 1946 to 22 September 1964. Neville Bunning formed the Ballarat Artist's Society (later the Ballarat Society of Artists), a group that sponsored art and which invited modernist artists to speak to students and to the public of Ballarat. He also wrote a weekly column in the Ballarat Courier. Bunning produced a bust of Australian Prime Minister, The Right Honourable J.A. Lyons from Tasmania, who died in office. Neville Bunning died in Subiaco, Western Australia on 29 April 1990. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
