The Melbourne artist Alma Agnes Marion Figuerola, the daughter of Juan Pedro Narciso Figuerola (1869-1919) and Alice Lucinda Walker Hanson (1889-1969) was born in Carlton in 1902. Alam and her two sisters grew up to be involved in the arts: Alma as a painter; Carmen Irene (1906-1993) as a short story writer, poet and teacher of dancing; and Sylvia (also Silvia) Lyla Alice (1911-1992) as a composer and cellist. The first art lessons Alma Figuerola received were with Oscar Binder. Later she attended the art school established by the Melbourne 'tonalist' [Duncan] Max Meldrum (1875-1955). She graduated from his school in 1920, participating in her first group exhibition in the same year. Solo exhibitions of her work were to be held in 1933 at the Meldrum Gallery in Elizabeth Street, in 1937 and 1945 at the Athenaeum Gallery at 188 Collins Street, and in 1951 at Georges Gallery in Collins Street. Throughout her extensive career she participated in group exhibitions, usually with artists of the Meldrum School, and as a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters, of which she was invited to become an associate in 1935. In 1953, her portrait of Professor ES Hills was entered in the Archibald Prize Competition of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. A resident of Kew from the 1930s - at 'Mount Edgecombe' 51 Studley Park Road, often with her mother, her sister Carmen, or both - from 1939 until her death she lived at 'D’Estaville', 7 Barry Street. From the late 1930s she is recorded as actively contributing to the arts at a local level. In 1939 and 1940 she participated in art exhibitions at the Hawthorn Municipal Library organised by Jessie Carbines. From 1944 to 1951 she co-organised successive Kew Arts Festivals, initially in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Highbury Grove and later at the Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. A foundation member of the Kew Historical Society in 1958, Alma Figuerola remained an active member of the Society until her death on 8 December 1970. A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. A portrait of a Legatee that had rejoined to serve in the second World War. The caption says it is Legatee E T T Scott. From NAA.gov.au Edward Thomas Tronson Scott joined on 6 March 1918 to serve in World War One, he was enroute on a troop ship when Armistice occurred and then ship returned to Australia. He caught influenza and was hospitalised for several months before being discharged. His records from the DVA show he enlisted 13 July 1940 and attained the rank of Major (service number VX46714), his posting at discharge was AASC Vic L of C Area. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). A portrait of Legatee Harold Edward Cohen CMG, CBE, DSO, VD, MLC, he served in both World Wars, attained the rank of Brigadier. He was the first president of Legacy in 1923 to 1924. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Harold Edward Cohen (1881-1946), soldier, lawyer, politician and businessman, was born on 25 November 1881. His early interest in soldiering led to him being first commissioned in the Australian Military Forces in 1901 in the Field Artillery. On the outbreak of the First World War he took overseas the 6th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, seeing service in France and Egypt, and being awarded the CMG and DSO, and being twice mentioned in despatches. He was twice wounded in action. He was awarded the Volunteer Decoration in 1921 and the CBE in 1934. In 1929 Brigadier Cohen entered Parliament as the member for Melbourne South in the Legislative Council, and in 1935 transferred to the Assembly as member for Caulfield, which seat he held until 1943. During the Second World War Brigadier Cohen served in the Middle East as honorary Red Cross Commissioner overseas. Returning to Australia in 1942 he was appointed director of amenities, and subsequently Deputy Adjutant-General to the AMF, which post he held until his retirement in 1944. The Easter Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week in April 1916. The Rising was launched by Irish republicans against British rule in Ireland with the aim of establishing an independent Irish Republic while the United Kingdom was fighting the First World War. A photo of the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy clubrooms on 27 November 1945. The photo appears in the Argus newspaper and the caption read: 'During her busy tour of service clubs yesterday the Duchess, while at the Legacy Club, accepted a cup of tea from Mrs E Sherwen, wife of the senior vice-president of Legacy. While this incident was being photographed a flashbulb exploded with a loud report, but the Duchess was unperturbed.' The article continued that the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were welcomed by the President W A Perrin and his wife. Mr Perrin explained that Legacy has accepted the responsibility of caring for children of deceased service men, and that since 1922 27,000 children have been given a chance at least equal to the one they might have had their fathers lived.
