Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Medals were all awarded to soldiers returning from active service that identifies campaigns in which they served. Awarded to George Bailey Jackson No 2172 AIF. Refer 3446P for his Service details. Set of 3 WW1 service medals court mounted. 1. The 1914-15 Star - Red, white & blue ribbon with gold medal, star shaped, crown on top and crossed swords. 2. British War Medal 1914-1920. Orange ribbon with blue and white edges. King George on front of round silver medal, and mounting horse on back. 3. The Victory Medal. Purple, green, yellow and red ribbon, gold circular medal with angel on front. Inscription on back. Brass pin on back of blue velvet mount.1. 1914 Star has year 1914-15 Inscribed. 2. James Roe Lodge was part of the Manchester Unity group.It was unveiled in September 1921.This is a carved decorative white marble honour roll. The title and names (Surname with initials) are carved into the marble. The head piece is a curved top. It has a carved hand with a red heart in the palm. The wrist of the hand is attached to a sphere. Either side of the hand are some branches. On the outside of the branches are the letters "M" on the left and "U" on the right. Fredrick Charles Dix enlisted 8th July 1915 at Castlemaine (at the time he was living with his Mother and stepfather in Fryers Town) after serving in the Senior Cadets. He was taken on by the 9th Light horse and sent to Egypt for further training. Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916.He served in France and was wounded by shrapnel in the eye socket but eventually returned to active duty on the front.He returned to Australia 6 September 1919 Sgt. F. C. Dix 1790 9th light horse 13th reinforcement 13 Field Artillery Brigade where he (several times) attained the rank of Sergeant. He also served during WWII at Nowra as a driver. World War 1 1914-18 affected most families in Moorabbin Shire with large numbers of young men enlisting in the Australian Infantry Force. Alonzo Sheldrake Box , a pavier of Oakleigh, Victoria served at Gallipoli, France and Somme . When he returned home Oakleigh, like many Australian Towns, celebrated his safety and courage by presenting him with this Gold Medal. Each town also mourned the loss of so many soldiers and collected money from the residents to build War Memorials on which were engraved the names of the deceased soldiers. Alonzo Sheldrake Box (1851 - 1958) was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who lived in Box Cottage , East Brighton - now Ormond -. He married Mary Louisa Closter on June 12th 1918 at Holy Trinity, Church of England, Oakleigh.Alonzo Box was the son of John Box, who migrated from Sussex, England with his brother William Box c1855 , and established a market garden in East Brighton that was part of the Henry Dendy ' Special Survey Brighton 1841'A gold metal medal with top crest , 2 attachment rings, engraved on both sides presented to Alonzo Sheldrake Box 'For God King and Country. Harry Holmes and his battalion friends photographed aspects of their time on the Suez Canal, Egypt. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt.
