Owned by Martin Balsarini, a resident of Chiltern Valley, for use in WW1. Service Number 1682. Martin Balsarini enlisted on the 21/7/1915 and served with the 4th Australian Lighthorse, AIF. He participated in what is known as the last great cavalry charge, the charge of the 4th Australian Lighthorse at Beersheba on the 31/10/1917. Badges such as this one were issued to soldiers by the Department of Defence to indicate they had returned from active service. It showed they had helped the war effort by serving their country. Sometimes returned soldiers were wrongfully accused of showing disloyalty to their country because they were not seen wearing a military uniform so wearing the badge helped avoid this. A number was often stamped on the reverse and a certificate was provided as authentication. Letter describes the writers' meeting with Mr W H Irvine of the 'Bay of Islands' and his time working on the farm.Significant as the letter describes day to day activities on the farm just after the first world war. It also provides an impression of the personality of Mr Irvine. Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 with wreaths at base. The "Girl's Remembrance League" worked to raise money for the memorial to be built. Cost was 643.0.0 pounds. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 10th Nov. 1923, by Archdeacon T.P. Bennett, (a respected pardre and old Stawell boy). Photo was copied from original donated by Mrs. L Matthew's whose mother Mrs. A. V. Cornish was a member of the Girls Remembrance League. Memorial was partly built by Robson & Grey, when partnership dissolved Mr. G.M. Robson completed the work.
