The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Driver George Judge standing on front of Locomotive X38 special train "Spirit of 96" The X class are a class of mainline diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering Victorian Railways between 1966 and 1976. X 38 was part of the second order. It entered service on Friday, 8th May 1970. X 37 and X 38 were built as replacements for the two S Class locomotives lost in the fatal Southern Aurora crash at Violet Town in 1969. It was later sold to Pacific National and rebuilt as XR550. "Spirit of 96" was a passenger train specially designed for cast and crew of the Australian 0-10 Network series “Number 96”. It was used to travel from Sydney to Melbourne for the annual TV Week Logie Awards. It was a silver, multi-carriage train with the Commissioner's carriage hooked up at the rear for VIPs. The 16 and a half-hour overnight journey, left from the centre of Sydney at 4.30 pm with a farewell party, complete with red carpet and jazz band in attendance. It featured whistle stop visits at country sidings and stations. Thousands of people turned out to see their favourite stars, before it arrived at Spencer Street station. The rail service of the time was keen to promote its overnight tourism packages, and for the journey the train was christened as the "Spirit of 96”. HMAS Perth (D29), a modified Leander-class light cruiser. Commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion in 1936, she was sold to the RAN three years later. The ship served until 1 March 1942, when she was sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait. HMAS Perth (D 38), the lead ship of the Perth-class guided missile destroyers. Built as a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer derivative for the RAN and commissioned in 1965, the ship served until decommissioning in 1999. She was sunk as a dive wreck off the coast of Albany, Western Australia, in 2001. The success of any flock is through the strength of its females and Blossom, a Border Leicester/Merino Cross ewe is an excellent example. These collars were worn by Mr Whiteman, Marjorie Burton's father, until he died in 1972. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. She came from a middle-class working church-going family. Her father served in Civil Defence during WW11. A detachable collar was a shirt collar separate from the shirt, fastened to it by buttons. The collar was usually made of a different fabric from the shirt and was almost always white and specially starched to a hard cardboard-like consistency. detachable collars were a better way to clean and starch a collar for business or formal wear. As more emphasis started to be placed on comfort in clothing wearing a detachable stiffly starched collar decline in day wear; although it is still often worn by barristers while a full dress shirt may still have a stiff detachable collar. These collars are examples of clothing which was commonly worn by businessmen in the first half of the 20th century.Four men's starched cotton shirt collars. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. William Cumming was a prominent Orbost identity. He was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, in 1866 the son of William Cumming and Mary Ann Montgomery. He came to Australia, aged 28, and to Orbost in 1890. He farmed at Bete Bolong and during WW1 ran a butcher's shop on his farm. He was a shire councillor and served as a South Riding representative for 38 years. He was a keen Newmerella football supporter, a member of the Orbost Bowling Club as well as a director of the Orbost Butter Factory. Cumming was married to Ellen Louise Mundy and had four children ( Harold, Mary, William and Gordon).This item is an example of a hand-written account for a local early 20th century business in Orbost. The 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry was raised at Blackboy Hill Camp Bellevue in Western Australia on the 17th of August 1914. Following a period of training of just 2 weeks the Battalion embarked at Fremantle on the HMAS Ascantius on the 11th of November 1918. The Ascantius formed part of a convoy 38 troop ships carrying approximately 35,000 Australians and New Zealanders and reached the port of Alexandria Egypt on the 3rd of December 1914. After arriving in Egypt, the Battalion camped and trained at Mena, ten miles from Cairo at the foot of the great pyramid Cheops. Joynt was the seventh member of the newly formed Legacy in 1923 and became a member of the Board of Management in 1924 and worked closely with Stan Savige. He was also instrumental in gaining the support of both General Sir John Monash and the R.S.L. to build the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as ensuring media backing and thus public support for the project. He worked tirelessly for Legacy for 38 years until he retired at the age of 84, and entered fully into comradeship activities throughout his involvement. He won his VC in 1917 at Chuignes during one of the last battles on the Somme. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime and was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria. 1. Lords Raceway trotting track was formally opened in November 1954 by Mr. Galvin the Trotting Club's Chief Secretary. 2. Clothes/cloth rationing was in place from June 1942 till June 1948. Adults were allowed 112 clothing coupons per year. A lady's dress used 12 coupons, a pair of socks 4 coupons, and a man's suit used 38 coupons. Other items affected by rationing were butter, tea, sugar, eggs, tobacco, petrol and Meat. Butter and tea were rationed until 1950. 3. Marong Catholic Church had its foundation stone laid in 1876, and the first services were held in1877. The church is now closed.1.
