In 1878 the family moved into their newly built home, Blythewood Grange, in Sebastopol. Arthur attended Grenville College and commenced Ballarat College in 1893. He was Apprentice as an Ironmonger at 'The Present Day Ironmonger' in Bridge Street. He next worked for William Dawson, Ironmonger, in Sturt Street, next to old The Courier Office. After the death of his father in 1893 the family moved out of ‘Blythewood Grange into Ballarat. In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century from 1905 to the 1940s. Many were collected and kept in albums. This scene is viewed looking north along Main Road from near Bridge Street. The old Baker’s shop (Burgoyne’s store) on the corner of York is on the right. Also visible is the footpath dug by hand c.1906 between Yoirk Street and Bridge Street. On the left is ‘Derril’ or more commonly known as the Gahan House after it was purchased by Walter Ernest and Alice Miriam Gahan in 1924, on the western side of Main Road near the present-day site of Shillinglaw Cottage where they remained till about 1960 when Walter died. The house was demolished in 1968 during the widening of Main Road. In the distance on the bend is the Shillinglaw cottage with the Shillinglaw trees out front of the cottage. On the eastern side at the top of the hill (visible immediately to the left of the bakery) is the new St Mary’s Catholic Church on Henry Street near Main Road. The church site was relocated c.1912 from further south along Main Road (near Wingrove Cottage) in order to be more central to the congregation following the shifting of the township away from Little Eltham and closer to the railway station. It was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1961. The Macedon Street Bridge over Jacksons Creek is important because it was built on one of Victoria's first important roads. ‘Studley Park Bridge’ or ‘penny bridge’ linked Church Street in Abbotsford and what is now Yarra Bend Park. The privately constructed bridge opened in 1857, gaining its popular name from the toll charged at the Abbotsford end. The engineer of the 485ft wide bridge was Mr. Austin and the builder was ‘Mr Grant, who threw the bridge over the Niagara’. Following the opening of Johnston Street Bridge, declining tolls led to the Bridge falling into disrepair. Badly damaged by the flood of 1891, the Bridge was compulsorily acquired by the Government in 1899, and later dismantled and sold for firewood.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. When the numerous gold mines declined in production, the eucalyptus oil industry became an important source of work. The first eucalyptus oil producer in Bendigo was a chemist called Richard Sandner who operated a plant and refinery in Bridge Street from 1876. By 1900, many other distillers operated on the northern edge of Bendigo and in the Whipstick. In 1926, the Forest Commision established a eucalyptus distillery at Gunyah in Wellsford State Forest. See the Wellsford Forest Note for more information. Today, there are just two eucalypt distilleries operating in Bendigo. Most of the world’s eucalyptus oil is now produced overseas. SOLOMON GULLY CIRCUIT WALK - Solomon Gully Nature Conservation Reserve. Rangers say this is a great place to see heaps of Bendigo Waxflowers. A 1.5km, unsurfaced track. It is rough and steep in places, but suitable for families. Closed shoes with a good drip are recommend. The track is popular with families and runners. The farmhouse built in the late 1800s by the Crozier Family. Subsequently owned by the Hill Family. Purchased in the early 1960s and by 1965 the property was owned by the Shire of Eltham. Employees of the Shire lived in the house. Susan Street originally ran all the way north of Bridge Street to the bend where it turned to the left into Brisbane Street. Today that section of Susan Street has been renamed as an extension of Brisbane Street. In 2006 the Shire of Nillumbik demolished the house which had been subject to extensive vandalism. In accordance with heritage advice and a permit condition a sign was placed on the site outlining the history of the building. This was installed and remained in place till about 2016 when it was removed. The land adjoins Alistair Knox Park. By 2010 the Eltham Skate Park was developed.
