1988: 12 November. “Bush Nursing” Our float in the Eltham Community Festival Parade won the award for the best display for the second year running. We received a trophy donated by the Billabong Family Bistro, Lower Plenty. The theme of the float was the Eltham Bush Nursing Hospital. The float was prepared by Bruce Ness with some help from other members. A number of members contributed with costumes and other props. Hospital equipment was kindly loaned by the Judge Book Village. As with previous parades members of the Victorian Folk Music Club joined us, their music providing a welcome addition to the float. From the estate of Elsie Cook, daughter of early Brodribb settler John Cook. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. The silver plated shaving mug was presented to Robert Cornelius WATTERS by his sister Norma WATTERS. She had it engraved with his name, P.M. 2990 for his port of embarkation and R.A.N.R.as a member of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve. Two matching drinking glasses produced to commemorate the Dutch European Cup victory of 1988.All inscriptions and illustrations are in orange. One side of the glass depicts an heraldic lion with the inscription: "Nederland Kampioen E.K. '88" The other side shows a soccer ball in full flight with below it the results of the various matches played on the way to victory.
