This basket forms part of a large collection reflecting the Irish heritage and collecting interests of the family. While this piece was purchased there are other Belleek pieces in both private and public collections across Ballarat once belonging to the same extended family. This piece is one of 100 examples from the Belleek factory that reflects the family's and Ballarat's Irish heritage. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection that reflects Ballarat's local history from a family perspective. Belleek was established following the Irish famine of the mid nineteenth century that brought so many Australian families, including the Taffe and Berkery families to immigrate to the Australian colonies. This Belleek porcelain tea set and tray in the Thorn pattern based on the hawthorn bush sprig in flower carries the impressed registration mark for 1878. Belleek was well represented at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880-81 at Melbourne's Exhibition building and many examples were bought by key Ballarat Irish families including those connected to this family such as the Brophy, O'Malley and Fitzgerald families, Julia Taffe's (nee Berkery) aunts uncles and cousins. Souvenir dish featuring transfer print of the Entrance to the Avenue of Honour 14 Miles Long. The print foregrounds the Arch of Victory Ballarat and was made for Ballarat firm of R. Tunbridge & Sons. Early example of fine English porcelain with a new Ballarat landmark for the more discriminating buyer as opposed to the more common mass produced transfer printed items made in Czechoslovakia. The Ballarat Avenue of Honour is the longest surviving such memorial avenue to the Great War in the world and together with its entrance arch was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in June 1920.Souvenir dish made in England for local Australian sales. The simple cottagy handpainted designs of Louse Powell's on Wedgewood creamware was popular in the 1920s. This is one of a set of four (possibly originally six) Louisa Powell decorated Wedgewood cups and saucers. Louise Powell was the grand-daughter of Emile Lessor.Wedgwood sought to offer a new product range which, after its success, lead to she and her husband receiving money towards a studio to work, two assistants in London and a studio in the Wedgwood factory. Their brief was to developed the art wares within the company. Their style was sought by Wedgwood to mass-produce works which coincided with the arts and crafts movement. A lot of Louise's work was individual as she preferred calligraphic and heraldic motifs. Believed to have been made by Tilly Aston, this tray cloth is an example of the type of skills the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind school taught its female students. Handicrafts was a possible method of income, and the emphasis was on producing usable pieces rather than highly decorative ones. The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. These include artefacts (wallpapers, textiles, carpet samples), furnishings, printed materials (catalogues, books, periodicals), and pictures (photographs).Part of a group of curtain furnishings which includes a curtain with original fittings, fringe and braid unpicked from other curtains, and these six curtain tie backs. The six curtain tie backs are identical, though one pair is shorter. The tie backs comprise a length of soft, loose (floss) silk cord, made of two thick strands twisted together (cable cord). An elaborate tassel is attached to the middle of each cord, to weight the tie back in an elegant loop, with the loose ends attached to hooks or pins on the window frame. Each tassel is formed of a turned wooden mould, covered with floss silk thread, and further decorated with knotted netting, applied braid, and glass beads. The end of the mould has a large flattened shape, from which hangs a ring of long, bullion metal fringe. This may be silver-gilt: untarnished parts are still true gold colour, while the majority of the fringing is tarnished black. William Morley Johnson established a stock and general auctioneers business in Kyneton in 1886 before opening a furniture store in Bendigo in 1897. The initial business operated from Pall Mall opposite the Post Office and then moved to 23 Mitchell Street in 1898. In 1906 the business moved to Sydney. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigh Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023.
