Quilt, 'Make do' quilt insert
The background history to this quilt is unknown as, like several of the Running Stitch quilts, it was found in an op-shop, this time in Ballarat. However, the technique used to bind it together and the rarity of the materials make it a valuable piece of our 'thrifty history'. The quilt insert has been made with layers of recycled bed coverings. It would have most likely had a cover made of a fabric (such as cretonne) as the layers have only been loosely held together with large quilting stitches. The outer layer is made of "marcella": a heavily woven cotton damask. These types of bedspreads were quite expensive and hardwearing. They were often handed down through the family and it is not surprising to see that the use for this particular bed covering has been continued past the 'presentable' stage on a bed.Detail of edge showing layers and stitching method. Saucer - china, John Dynon and Sons
The china saucer was purchased sometime during a cruise by an unknown person. It is part of a cruise liner collection by D. Benson and Family over a period of years. D. Benson sold part of the collection to the V.M.C who purchased the remaining part. It is a great source of information to visitors to the V.M.C. At the time of ocean liner holiday cruising, many people purchased these souvenirs to keep or give away as gifts.China saucer with blue pattern on the edge, with Huddart Parker Line flag and emblemHuddart Parker Line flag and emblemsouvenir, cruise liners, huddart parker liner -

Melbourne Legacy
Postcard, Penny Royal Gunpowder Mills Postcard
The place shown on the photo still has an important relevance for the local history in Launcestown Tasmania. This place represents one of the most relevant touristic places of Tasmania and brings to the local government a very good amount of income for local developments and self management of the place. The date of this postcard is unknown but probably around 1980 as this place apparently was opened by 1979. The connection to Legacy is unknown but other postcards were sent to the Comradeship Committee when Legatees travelled.Comradeship Committee often received postcards from Legatees when they were away on holidays.Glossy postcard, with serrated edges, showing a photo of the Penny Royal Gunpowder Mills.Handwritten text: 'They have the small cannons on the boat - noisy and scared Alison but quite effective really. The whole complex is build in an old quarry', in black pen.
