The copy of a letter written by Harry H. Simmonds of Huon notes that "the church existed in 1905. It was built by Hill and McCormack with timber donated by Mr Ned Dunstan on ground donated by Mr James Thomas probably in the late 1800s. It was possibly called a Methodist Church because the donor of the land was a Methodist. It was used by the three Protestant Groups and maintenance was paid for by an annual area collection.The house on the west side was a Presbyterian Manse for many years and the block of ground on the north side was known as the Manse paddock in which the minister grazed his cow and horse." In 1936 there was a fence between the Kiewa Methodist Church was the Presbyterian Church in Kiewa. Its Certificate of Title is Volume 5134 Folio 1026783 (Sept. 1942.) In 1952, the church was made of wood with an iron roof. In 1954. Request to Yackandandah Shire re a fence from Kiewa Consolidated School entrance to the unused hedge adjacent to the Church. In 1958 there was correspondence re 'the strip of land on each side of the Church.' Churches were an important part of life during the late 19th century and early to mid 20th century and were built in the centre of town as was this one. These papers give an understanding of the work involved in maintaining a church. The letters and 'book' give a lot of names of local families involved with the Methodist Church at Kiewa. Of particular interest is a black cardboard cover book dated 1917 re collection of donations from listed people. Pocket Book gifted by the Australian Comfort Fund to George Denis Parker VX123730 who served with the 6th Australia Infantry Training Brigade. He was deployed in February 1944 to New Guinea and assigned to HQ New Guinea Force Details Depot. Based in Buna, in Papua, they carried out garrison duties as well as patrols around the areas surrounding Milne and Nassu Bay. In May 1944, they moved to Lae. The Rev A W Pederick was a chaplain who served in the New Guinea Campaign during WWII. His service included the Kokoda Trail. Brown leather carry case with a brown metal base, a carry handle and two lockable latches on the font. The box has a blue velvet lining. The box holds a paten, diameter 12.0 cm, and a wafer tin which are held in pouches in the lid. Two bottles with cork and silver lids are in fitted compartments inside the box which also contains a small white embroidered cloth. There is embossed gold lettering on the front of the box. This docket from the firm of Wilson and Anderson, auctioneers, gives details of the sale of 3 rams on behalf of Joseph Tilley of ‘Aringa’. The total profit for Mr Tilley was £6. Wilson and Anderson were stock and station agents operating in the early 20th century from the Royal Chambers in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. Joseph Tilley ran the property of ‘Aringa’ which was on the Portland Road, five miles from Port Fairy. He also owned the Penshurst Hotel at that time. This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1917 sale of rams with the names Wilson and Anderson and Joseph Tilley of some local interest. It gives us the prices for rams at the time and the type of account form used. This is an original docket of 1917. It is a printed one with printed red lines for entering the details of the sale. Aloysious McGann was a WW1 soldier, service number 2365, who was killed in action at France in June 1917. He was a resident of Chiltern and was married to Celia Elizabeth McGann from Lake Moodemere, Rutherglen. He was a cadet and a Citizens Military Forces member prior to the commencement of WW1. Aloysious served with 37 Batallion, 3 Division. Prior to his enlistment Aloysious was a grocer by trade. He is buried at Grave number 3456 Menin Gate Memorial Ypres Belgium.
