A group photo of a group of Legacy girls on a camp at Mount Evelyn in May 1946. The accompanying letter says that Miss Enez Domec Carre is in the centre with Legatee Buth in front of her looking between two girls. Also in the picture is Legatee Vines and Legatee 'Grat' Gratten. The photo and letter were sent to Legacy by Val Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and the photo had been forwarded to her by the family of her good friend the late June Whitechurch. An article in the Legacy newsletter of August 1946 says that on 19th may, 90 Junior and Intermediate girls travelled by Red Cross coaches to St Mark's Holiday Camp at Mt Evelyn. The girls were divided into 4 teams distinguished by coloured sashes in Green, Gold, Red and Blue. The teams competed against each other in sports and other activities that were awarded points. A pleasant hike was arranged to Mr Beveridge's Log Cabin which was where Mr Beveridge took this photo.A record of a camp for young girls in 1946. These photos are of a gathering at the Shrine of Legatees and a delivery of lone pine saplings on the back of a ute. Legatee George Woodward was present, also a school girl and a veteran. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. These are the saplings grown from the seeds collected by President Chas Wilks in 1989 (item 01426). From an article in The Answer in June 1994 the event was the official handing over of the seedlings that were propagated. Present were Minister for Natural Resources, The Hon Geoffrey Coleman and Gallipoli veteran Tom Brain. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of Legacy being involved with distributing saplings in 1993. Since 1988, Legacy has held a public speaking contest called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award, later called Legacy's Junior Public Speaking Award. Schools were eligible to send along representatives that competed. This certificate was issued to participants. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Photos the 10th Annual Art and Craft Exhibition that was run by the Widows' Club. The label identifies Marianne Spruyt from Guterman Craft as the judge that year. The items could be sold at trading tables and at the table outside Legacy House during Badge Week in September to raise funds. The label mentions the Widows' Club made a donation each year to Legacy. This document from 1987 is an estimate of the number of widows to be in the care of Legacy from 1987-1995. Both WW1 and WW2 Widows are included in the study. The projected totals show a marked decline in WW1 Widows and a marked increase in WW2 widows.The figures show a dramatic decline in WW1 widows due to ageing, and a marked increase in WW2 widows due to their husbands deaths through ageing,war related injuries. Various invitations, programmes and other mementos collected from Legacy events held during the early 1960's. These include invitations and tickets to the Annual Demonstrations of 1960 and 1961, the ANZAC eve school children's ceremony, also to the Senior Widows Club Grand concert (18 December 1961). The Senior Widows club also held a Christmas Dinner. Also a lapel tag for the Legacy Mothers Club. There are also mementos for Junior Legatees, such as tickets to attend the Christmas party at Government House and to Operation Float in 1962 and 1963. The president's page discussed the type of activities and help legatees can provide and urges the junior legatee to come forward with any questions. An example of a badge issued by Legacy in 2023 exclusively for the Torch Society members. The Torch Society are people that have made substantial donations to Melbourne Legacy and/or have left a bequest to Legacy in their Will. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. A caricature drawing labelled 'Melbourne Good Samaritans - The Legacy Club', of the early Legatees with their names, roles and some characteristics. The artist was 'Wells' and it was reprinted in the Weekly bulletin in 1979. It was also printed in Blatchford's book in 1932 with the caption 'Some Club Leaders in 1928'. Many of these names appear through the archive but very few have photos, so this is one of the few examples of what some the early Legatees looked like. The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in separate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. It was held at the club rooms at 55 Market St, Melbourne. The menu included 'Musso (spaghetti) on toast / Sausages and garden salad / Peaches, jelly and ice cream / Coffee.' It includes a comic drawing of members and humorous characterisation of the members. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. A recollection of information about Girls Legacy Club and its primary instructor Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was written by C.E. Chancellor in June 1976. "Draft only. Girls Legacy Classes When I was attached to Girls' Classes after being transferred from Mildura Club to Melbourne, I found that the difference between the administration of the Girls' and the Boys' Classes was that the Girls' Classes were centralised in one building in Market Street, whilst the Boys' Classes were held in Melbourne and in various suburbs. The building in Market Street was leased from the Melbourne City Council, it was old, had narrow stairways, small rooms and was dusty and noisy so that is can be appreciated that the classes were held under great difficulties and inconvenience. Classes were held on both Friday and Tuesday nights of each week and the girls were trained in physical culture, ballet and dancing, and most of them also attended a speech training class. The girls were divided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior girls, and the hourly classes commenced at 5 p.m. It will be appreciated that after WW2 the numbers of girls attending increased considerably (actual numbers may be on old files) and it was necessary for the overall organisation to be efficient for this work to be efficiently carried out. In retrospect I do not think that too great a tribute can be paid to Miss Enez Domec Carre, F.P.C.V., not only for her great ability in teaching the physical culture and dancing classes, but also because she became the confidant of the mothers and the girls for their particular problems, and was able to transmit these to the Class Legatees, and she also assisted in helping to solve them - and be sure there were many of them with so many girls and families involved. Miss Carre was also responsible for the many magnificent presentations of the various items learnt by the Classes during each year and of the merging of individual classes held at various times and days to enable them to be so successfully shown at the each annual Legacy Parade. Miss Carre also organised the Mothers, Legatees' wives and friends into sewing groups to provide the thousands of costumes required for the items presented, and naturally she had to design these costumes - all of this work was carried out, as previously mentioned, under the extreme difficulties they were working under in the Market Street building. The purchase of Legacy House and the transfer of classes to this building was of immense help and importance in the carrying on of these classes which have proved so valuable to Legacy work. Many of the girls - now Mothers and Grandmothers still help in Legacy work and still appreciate the value of the Girls' Classes were to them. C.E. Chancellor cc. to Legatees A.R. The Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group was formed by junior legatees who had become adults. They ran functions for junior legatees in a spirit of service that emulated the work of Legatees. Colour slide of the Governor talking to a widow at Government House in 1960. Melbourne Legacy held an annual Christmas Party for Junior Legatees and Widows at Government House for many years. Junior Legatees were given gifts. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The photo shows a Junior Legatee, now Captain Len Frazer being inducted into Melbourne Legacy as a senior legatee by L/- Stan Savige on 26 January 1943. Notes with another photo taken at the event (see 01368) identifies the man as Captain Len Fraser, who had been a Junior Legatee after his father died in the first World War at Ypres. He then served in World War 2 and on his return qualified to become a member of Melbourne Legacy. His service number was VX15205, full name Leonard Thomas Frazer. From Trove a newspaper article describes his background. "Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Wednesday 27 January 1943, page 5 FIRST JUNIOR LEGATEE IN SENIOR CLUB Capt L. T. Frazer was initiated to membership of Legacy Club by Maj-Gen S. G. Savige, founder of the club, at a simple ceremony yesterday. He was the first returned soldier of this war, and first junior Legatee, to be admitted to membership. Joining junior Legacy in 1928, Capt Frazer, whose father was killed in the last war, was a foundation member of the Intermediate Club, of which he became president, and he gained the right to admittance to the senior club by having seen active service with the AIF. Enlisting in April, 1940, he served in the Middle East, Greece, and Crete. His father was killed in action with the first AIF at Ypres. Capt Frazer, who joined the Melbourne City Council as an engineering junior in 1928, graduated to senior MCC engineering assistant before he enlisted. At present he is attached to Army Engineers, LHQ. His wife and 3 children live at Canterbury."Sir Stanley Savige was the founder of Melbourne Legacy.
