In 1909 students of Rutherglen State School sent an Australian flag to pupils of Rutherglen Scotland Schools, and a year later a Union Jack flag was sent to the Australian Rutherglen School. These eight girls all grew up in Rutherglen. From L to R: Sarah (mother of the donor Nelsa N Atkinson), Eliza (commonly called Tom), Kate, Alice, Florence, Jean, Vida, Grace Alice. They all went to the Rutherglen School where Sarah became a 'pupil teacher'.
