Photos from a camp for handicapped dependents in January 1992. These photos show different camp activities, including arts and craft, eating meals, cleaning up in the kitchen and outside activities. Some appeared in the newsletter in March 1992. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp (believed to be Somers School camp). It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 Legatees attended this camp with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. Legacy celebrated its 80th year in 2003, David Ford was the president and was about to hand over to George Mackenzie. In 1995 Legacy was promoted by a tram painted with 'Legacy never forgets' as part of the "Australia Remembers 1945-1995" program marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2. Six school girls from Siena College came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Photos included Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Also a cake and sandwiches enjoyed by the gathering. Beryl Billing was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Document - Thesis, Healy Research Project 1976
This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. He titled it 'The Task-Focused Volunteer: An Evaluation of the Work of the Legacy Club of Melbourne'. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service. 1889 BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES ENJOYED HIGH STATUS IN AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS. SEVERAL SMB STUDENTS WERE RESIDENTS OF CLUNES. SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN.. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS FOR SCHOOLS OF MINES AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS AND CONFLICTING VIEWS OF GOVERMENTMINISTERS RE SUBJECTS THAT COULD BE TAUGHT , CAUSED DIFFICULTIES. ONE LOCATION FOR ALL CLASSES BECAME THE ANTICIPATED SOLUTION TO MOST PROBLEMS. TITLE CLUNES SCHOOL OF MINES NO 24 APPEARED IN MEDIA NOTICES AND REPORTS WEST PARADE SITE FRONTING SERVICE STREET GRANTED BY CLUNE SBOROUGH COUNCIL TO COUNCIL OF CLUNES SCHOOL OF MINES FOR ERECTION OF BUILDING FOR SCHOOL PURPOSES. BUILDING COMMENCED 1892 NEW BUILDING OPENED IN FEBRUARY. ALL CLASSES CONDUCTED IN NEW BUILDING.SEVERE LIMITATION IN FUNDING FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND IN MOST GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES WAS EVIDENT NEW REGULATIONS FOR TECHNICAL SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED FOR OPERATION IN 1893, THE RQUIREMENTS FOR FUNDINGS WERE MUCH TOUGHER. 1893 STUDENT NUMBERS STILL VERY DISAPPOINTING. INSPECTORS DENNANT AND SIMPSON VISITED AND ADVISED ON BEST POSSIBLE FUNDING PROCURABLE . Note by T.H. Kneen 13 May1992, "The Burnley display was part of the Division of Agricultural Education's display covering Dookie, Longerenong and Burnley. Reference to Rural Training in 1957 would have been mainly to the on-farm training phase of the Rural Reconstruction Training Scheme. The Agricultural Collegians Association members had a meeting point at the exhibit. Burnley ex-students were not members of that association."Black and white photograph.
