This was the last year Wooragee Landcare Group met with Beechworth Prison Farm and Industry Managers at the prison itself, where they discussed weed and rabbit control on the prison's 'Rockery' block. The weed and rabbit controls that were explored in this event aimed to educate people on how to manage common pests in the Wooragee landscape and improve the appearance of the Beechworth Prison. The Beechworth prison itself is significant as it was built between 1859 and 1864 and is designed using a radiating 'panopticon' method which had proved an efficient, cost-effective design for easy surveillance of prisoners by allowing guards to watch over a large area from a central observation point. The prison is historically significant for its association with the early development of Beechworth as the government administrative centre of north-eastern Victoria. It is part of a major precinct of public buildings and has links to numerous other places in Beechworth which used granite quarried and broken at the prison by male inmates. It is also significant for its associations with the bushranger Ned Kelly and the Kelly storyThe photo holds significance due to the social and educational context the image holds in representing the events Wooragee Landcare Group held in order to educate the public. In 1928 the Committee of the National War Memorial of Victoria called on the public to donate funds to the building of the Shrine of Remembrance (see booklet at 01206). This receipt is an example of the certificate provided to the donor to show their contribution. The donation from Miss R. Booth was for 1 shilling. The right hand portion was intended to be detached and kept, it did not record the amount as it was to show she had made a gift to the Shrine regardless of the amount. In the booklet at 01206 people were asked to donate whatever they could depending on their circumstances and made a point that the amount wouldn't be shown on the certificate. The Legacy Interview/Report Form shows that Mrs R Innes donated this artefact to Legacy in 1981. It is part of the business practice of recording how things were donated to Legacy and all the details of the items. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01211).A record of the general public contributing to the building of the Shrine of Remembrance, in 1928 Victorians were asked to contribute approximately £100,000 to the building project. Also that items relating to the Shrine were donated to Legacy for archiving and that procedures were in place to record the event. There was an effort to record historical events for the "Archive Committee" which collected this and other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01211)A receipt of a donation in 1928 to the fund for building the Shrine, off white paper and black print. A party of surveyors camped by Yuille's Swamp (later Lake Wendouree) and surveyed the countryside for a map to be produced by the Geological Survey of Victoria. In November 2004 the Central Highlands Regional Library presented a special edition of 200 copies of the 1861 map reproduced from a copy in their collection. In 1891 to 1983 there were three chemists near View Point Bendigo; they were A. Collins, 9 View St and Pall Mall; G. M. Dorman at 25 View St; E. L. Holdsworth, 9 Charing Cross and J. Holdsworth at 15 Charing Cross and Pall Mall. On the 20 June 1892 David Anderson (1861-1937) took over from A Collins as Chemist and Druggist at 9 View Street, opposite the Bank of Victoria. He had been manager for the three previous years. In 1895 to 1908 the David Anderson Chemist was at View Point. David Anderson's father William (Willie) died on the 7th April 1901 at View Place. David Anderson was married to Jeanette (Jessie) Riviere, Ironbark. David's nephew Rae Alexander Anderson OAM (1903-1986) was connected to St Paul's Church and a pharmacist at the Bendigo Hospital. Rae was the organist and choir master of the parish church of St Paul, Bendigo, 1931 - 1965. Rae's son Stuart Anderson from the Balgownie Winery 1969-1999; had also been a pharmacist.Certificate of Registration (Pharmacy Act of Victoria, No 558}; for David Anderson, Sandhurst. The original certificate has been pasted to cardboard and possibly had been framed. This glass plate photograph shows good detail of members of the Warrnambool Garrison posing for their photograph in front of a young township. There are other well-dressed citizens behind them. The three men with frogging on their sleeves were commanders were likely to be commanders. The men are facing north with Cannon Hill and the fortification area in the background. It dates from the 1860s. The firearms held appear to be 1853 pattern Lee Enfield muskets used by the British army in Crimea at this time and in Australia, rather than the later Martini Henry cartridge rifles. The uniforms match other photos of the Warrnambool Garrison Militia and Band in our Collection, taken up until the 1880s. The three storey building in the photograph is likely to be the Manifold & Bostock flour mill, built in 1854 near the ‘cutting’ in Merri Street, which was one of the main streets at the time; if one faced the building’s front from a vantage point and looked south to south-east, the hills around Flagstaff Hill and Cannon Hill would be behind that mill, and the Harbour behind the hills. This is the area of the Fortifications. The glass plate method of photography was widely used during the mid-19th to early-20th century. The donor and maker of the photograph are unknown. Around this time the citizens of Victoria were prospering from the gold rush but felt isolated and uneasy about their security in the colony. In 1854 the Volunteer Act was passed to provide some military defence. In 1858 the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps was established, disbanded in 1863, then a new Warrnambool Detachment was formed in September 1866. Legislation was passed in 1884 that replaced the volunteers’ corps with a partly paid, permanent Militia Defence Force. The batteries manning the coastal forts of Victoria were termed Garrison Artillery Companies. When the Army was federated in 1901 there were eight Militia Companies in Victoria. Warrnambool and Port Fairy together were known as 8 Coy AGA (Australian Garrison Artillery). Changes to formation and name continued into the 20th century.This photograph is a record of the very early local defence force, circa 1866. The photograph signifies the connection of the colony in Victoria to the growing need for security due to the unrest in Europe at that time. The photograph is also locally significant to the industry of the young township of Warrnambool, showing what is likely to be one of the first flour mills in the town. The photograph is also the only example of the early methods of glass plate photography in our collection. Photograph, rectangular glass plate, positive sepia image. Photograph has brass framed edges that fold over to the back, with mitred corners. The front edges are pressed with a decorative floral pattern. The photograph shows a group of thirty military men, standing or kneeling, in dark uniforms with pillbox forage caps, round-collared jackets with light buttons, light sashes worn from top left shoulder to bottom right side of waist belt, and long, straight-legged trousers. Three of these men have light braid around the buttons on the front of their jackets, light frogging on their sleeve cuffs and stripes on the outside seams of their trousers. The other twenty-seven men have plain uniforms and are holding firearms in their right hands, steadied with their left hands. Other figures are standing behind this group of soldiers, including three or four men wearing top hats, jackets and ties. In the background is a row of buildings. The central building is three stories high. Bare hills are in the far background. The foreground is uneven ground with patches of short grass. The postcard shows St Vincent's Hospital, on the northern side of Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, circa 1914. At left is the original hospital building, a converted terrace house, alongside the first purpose-built wing opened 1905 and the Cullen Wing (with facilities for medical students and residents) on the right. A group of two men and three boys stands on the footpath outside the Cullen Wing and a car is parked outside the main hospital building in the centre of the photograph. This painting was inspired by an original painting by Wilhelm Melby held at the National Gallery of Victoria. Melby is a Danish artist (1824-1882). It depicts a famous Devonshire coastal region famous now for its lighthouse and the pick up point for the pilot when entering waters approaching Dartmouth. The sailing vessels pre-date the construction of the famous lighthouse. Over the centuries the view would have been familiar to many sailors as they left or approached the English mainland and south coast ports in the English Channel. Madeline Mary Ravenna Lewellin (1854 – 24 November 1944) was born in Victoria to Dr John Henry Hill Lewellin, a physician, and Grace Elizabeth (née Danneby). She was one of five daughters, and the family lived in Prahran. Lewellin's brother, Captain Herbert Gordon Hill Lewellin, was a commander in the P. and O. fleet (apprentice on the Romanoff, Lieutenant RNR on the HMS Arethusa in 1899, RMS Mongolia in 1913 sunk in 1917, Naldera in 1920). She studied painting at the National Gallery School in 1879 under Eugene von Guerard. She's also known for collecting and painting specimens, and became a member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria in 1885. In 1884 she won a silver medal for her studies of fungi. She collected plants for Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the variety of Dicrastylis lewellinii (Purple sand-sage) is named after her. Miss Lewellin, who had a love of the sea and ships as subject matter is listed in 1910 as a donor as a 10/6 member donating to the motor launch fund and in 1918 as a working member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild which involved regular volunteer shifts at the Mission to Seamen on canteen and other duties.Marine art, Maritime artThis oil painting has a dark polished wood and gold leaf slip. The painting depicts two masted boats. The choppy sea takes up the lower-third of the painting, and the other two-thirds of the image of made up of stormy grey clouds. A rocky cliff face can be seen on the right-hand side of the painting. A small church can be seen on the hillside. The ship on the left third of the painting sits on the horizon line of the sea. The centre ship with two masts appears to be leaning to the right and its deck is exposed to the viewer showing four men attempting to handle the masts and rigging. The left-hand ship with three masts is surrounded by two grey distant silhouetted mast ships. There are three seagulls at the upper left-centre of the image. The 2 story building to right of the Victoria Hotel became the Stock Exchange as auction room of Shadrach E.R.Jones who was also a Doctor of Medicine. Building to left of the Colonial. Bank was the shop of J.Nelson Jones Chemist afterwards a Brewer, he came to Australia 1848 and died in Ararat 9/1/14 (88). The Red Ribbon Movement of 1853 represented a significant series of events in the history of Bendigo. During that year there was much agitation on the Bendigo gold fields, particularly during July and August of 1853, directed against the payment of what the miners called a tax - a licence fee of thirty shillings ($3) a month for the right to search for gold on what was declared Crown land. They had to pay the licence whether they found gold or not. The miners, or diggers as they were called, also resented the means used by the authorities at the time to collect the gold licence - through so-called 'digger hunts'. The miners were expected to carry their licences with them, and the police, who were often untrained, used harsh methods to check these licences. In Bendigo, the miners took to wearing a red ribbon ‘as a symbol of their protest against the licence. Red was a very common colour in items such as shirts, so was readily available. Shopkeepers too tied red ribbons to their premises as a sign of support for the miners. It should be remembered at that time virtually everyone was a miner. The diggers also had their own banner, designed by William Dexter, a china painter from Devon. This flag showed the pick, shovel and cradle representing labour, the scales representing justice, the Roman bundle of sticks meaning unity and the kangaroo and emu of Australia Many thousands of Bendigo miners signed a petition to La Trobe, the Governor of Victoria, protesting against the licence fee. When the Governor rejected the petition, thousands of diggers marched in peaceful protest. Miners from White Hills, Eaglehawk, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat as well as from Bendigo Flat, converged on what is now Pall Mall and View Point, surrounding the ~government camp on Camp Hill. The camp had been reinforced with soldiers of the 40 Regiment, as the Government feared bloodshed. The miners then gathered on the hill behind View Point to hear from their leaders - among them George Thomson, Captain Harrison, Captain Brown and W.D.C. Denovan. They resolved to pay a token fee often shillings ($1) for the September licence, whenthey met with Commissioners Panton and Wright on Camp Hill. Although Wright and Panton were sympathetic to the miners, the offer was rejected, but no licence fees were collected for September. Thus a possible bloody conflict was averted by the common sense shown by the miners' leaders and the commissioners. It was a truly democratic protest against arbitrary government and preceded the Eureka Stockade Incident by over a year.
