"BARAMBAH A37 HMAT" Australian Government / 1912 built as the "Hobart" a cargo steamship for/ the German-Australian line, Hamburg. In 1914 seized at Melbourne and refitted as a Troop transport, renamed "Barambah" and given the prefix A37. Remained in such capacity until 23 May 1918 then transferred to Commonwealth Government Line of Steamers fleet. In early 1925 sold to North German Lloyd, Bremen and renamed "Justin", until scrapped May 1935. The original photograph was by J.E. Barnes of Kew who was also known as the embarkation photographer ( see also Kew Historical Society entries on Vic Collections) This photograph of significance and interest as it is believed to be Port Melbourne in 1914 quite close to the Mission to Seamen at PM who may have had the mission facilities used by the crew of this ship. It shows: the nature of a small steamship used for troop movement 1914, also some of the family groups gathered to farewell loved ones departing for action during WW1. The bayonet has a release button to free the the blade to a position as required. There is a metal scabbard to house the bayonet blade, there is a metal loop on the scabbard to hang onto a belt. This medal was awarded to Ernest Henry Swan. He served from December 1941 to July 1942 in the Citizen Military Forces and from July 1942 to September 1944 in the Australian Imperial Forces. His reason for discharge was reserved occupation. He held the rank of corporal in 26th Motor regiment. He was born in Colac 19/11/1919 to Ernest Swan and Daisy Johnson. He died 04/08/2009 and is buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. During his life he farmed a soldiers’ settlers block in the Grasmere area, north of Warrnambool.A common item which relates to a local soldier and World War 11.Round white metal medal with bar at top. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit.
