Postcard, Penny Royal Gunpowder Mills Postcard
The place shown on the photo still has an important relevance for the local history in Launcestown Tasmania. This place represents one of the most relevant touristic places of Tasmania and brings to the local government a very good amount of income for local developments and self management of the place. The date of this postcard is unknown but probably around 1980 as this place apparently was opened by 1979. The connection to Legacy is unknown but other postcards were sent to the Comradeship Committee when Legatees travelled.Comradeship Committee often received postcards from Legatees when they were away on holidays.Glossy postcard, with serrated edges, showing a photo of the Penny Royal Gunpowder Mills.Handwritten text: 'They have the small cannons on the boat - noisy and scared Alison but quite effective really. A postcard from Kristiania, which is the former name of Oslo, Norway. The title says 'Kristiania. Stortinget og Grand Hotel'. The Stortinget is the name of the parliament building, which is the building on the right of the picture. The Grand Hotel is on the left. The postmark is 1924 which is before Kristiania was renamed Oslo in 1925. The link to Legacy is not known. There are many postcards in the collection from different times and people.This postcard has an aesthetic and historical significance, the perfect handwriting shown on the back of the postcard certainly represents a significant way of traditional handwriting used at that time. This tankard mug was produced by Legacy to honour Legatee Syd Birrell possibly after he was awarded the MC. Legatee Birrell was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1949. Ceramic - Mug, Our Patron, 195
This ceramic tankard mug was produced for Melbourne Legacy to honour their Patron. The Patron of Legacy is usually the Governor of Victoria, since the very early days of Legacy. It appears to be taken from a photo of General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, DSO, KStJ., who was Governor of Victoria from 1949. The date made is unknown but it believed to be early 1950s. Similar mugs were produced to honour Legatees Stan Savige and Syd Birrell and were estimated to have been produced in late 1940's or early 1950s. A similar one was made for the Queen's coronation in 1953. The maker was the firm of EG Greenway, a pottery manufacturer, which was connected to Legatee Herb Greenway.Shows the importance of the patron that he was commemorated in a ceramic mug along with Syd Birrell and Stan Savige and the Queen.Cream ceramic mug with handle, with relief portrait of the patron of Legacy, under which is etched 'Our Patron' on one side, with a relief symbol of the Legacy Torch and Wreath of Laurel on the opposite side.'Our Patron' is etched under the relief portrait. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. This postcard also records Gallipoli for those who didn't have cameras. This type of souvenir would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1 and many had served at Gallipoli.Postcard showing black and white image of the bridge at Rodah, Guizeh (Giza). Several figures and a tram are also pictured crossing the bridge. A black postal stamp in the top left quadrant of the postcard indicates it was posted from Cairo. The back of the postcard contains a message. A postcard from Belfast. Part of the collection relating to John Basil McLean, who normally signs himself Basil. He returned to Australia in April 1920. The date on this card implies someone sent this a few months later from Belfast. One of the items relating to JB McLean was a vesta (match) case from Belfast (see item 01125). Souvenir Teaspoon featuring Ballarat tram No. 38 in an inset at the top of the tea spoon, contained within a plastic case. The teaspoon made by Perfection Plate, of the Cameo style or type. The case has white plastic base, red and yellow foam base, with clear top, marked "Cameo" and a $3 yellow price sticker stuck to it. On the rear of the case is the wording "Perfection Souvenirs". On the top of the case at the base in white printing "Silver plated / Made in Australia" The teaspoon is silver plated, with the tram in a picture 15mm diameter. The teaspoon is marked "Cameo" on the rear. The silver plating on the rear was not done properly and is the reason why the spoon was not sold by the Museum at the time. Set of 12 coloured views of Ballarat printed with six photos on either side of a folded strip of paper glued within an embossed paper folder. Published by Nucolorvue Productions Vic., titled "A Souvenir of Beautiful Ballarat". Demonstrates the way the Australian Bi-Centenary and other celebrations were carried out with souvenir prints.Framed print of a horse drawn tram (3 horses) see Reg Item 699 at the corner of Sturt and Lydiard St, within a wooden frame, with non-reflective glazing. The print by the Harris House of Photography has been mounted onto a piece of Masonite. On rear are picture hanging metal loops and a wire hanging strip.
