Part of G Mackay 'Annals of Bendgo'Page 5 has an article titled Annals of Bendigo ''-the first article under this heading was published in the Bendigo Advertiser on 7th July .Included are Cameo photos of Messrs Johnson , Fenton , Sandbach , Frencham and Mrs Kennedy together with an early sketched map of the Bendigo Goldfields . Within the article is a mention of the sketched map as follows - '' The accompanying map was drawn from memory by W. Sandbach who lived a month in the Mia mia (22nd November to 19th December 1851 ) …The map was laid before the Frencham committee at the inquiry. The transient nature of a diggings is indicated by the digger's dwelling places, which were either tents - - - Slide shows that only the bare necessities were found in a miner's tent. You would find a table, a stump for a stool, makeshift bed, cooking posts and kettle, under the table you can see a pair of boots and some items that may be ingredients for cooking. Diggers & Mining. Chinese on the goldfeild. Gold. The census of 1854 showed only, 2,341 Chinese in Victoria, but it was taken at a time when their numbers were increasing rapidly. In 1854, 4,920 Chinese arrived by sea in small, over-crowded vessels; and 11,289 came in 1855. Many pictures drawn by Gill in 1854 and 1855 show Chinese on the goldfields. Markings: 9 994.GOL.
