On the rear of each ticket has the use details. .1 - Sunday Saver Full Fare - Zone 1, $2.50, issued 15/4/2005 and used on the same date. .2 - Printed Metcard, but no use details, advertising the October 2005 Arts Festival - not used. .3 - ditto advertising the "Transported Back" exhibition at the Public Records Office, finishing 28/1/2005. .4 - "The Summer Read" advertising a competition sponsored by the State Library of Victoria - undated, has the logos of the State Library and Victorian Government (the place to be) - mid 2000's? Book - 16 pages printed on off white paper plus light card cover printed on grey paper, titled "Tramway by the River - a brief history of the Hawthorn Tramways Trust". Originally written by Bob Prentice in a TMSV Running Journal of 1966 (Vol. 2 No. 4), then to a booklet by Peter Bardho of Tramway Publications in 1993. Covers the history of the trust, those involved, horse tram, operations, Riversdale Road extension, mileage, track layout with plans, overhead, rollingstock, the Burwood accident of Jan. 1917, depot, substation, Wattle Park, employees strike, fares and sections, annual balance sheets, timetables, rolling stock data, disposal and an epilogue following the establishment of the MMTB. Flyer for the steamer Viva, Abbott & Co., Printers, c.1860
The "Viva" was a steamboat operated by George Dent that ran on the Yarra River between Princes Bridge and Hawthorn Bridge from 1860-1861. Printer flyer pasted onto cardboard advertising ferry services between Melbourne and Hawthorne [sic]. Corrections to ferry departure times are in black handwritten ink. Flyer has losses around edges and stains from 'blue-tack' verso. Ephemera - Ticket/s, MMTB Transfer ticket, early 1920's
Ticket - 2 1/2d, MMTB black printing on light brown paper with the value in green ink. A transfer ticket matched with Reg Item 5522. Has a "Victoria Bitter" print on the rear. Ticket No. R799195 Advice from Dean Filgate 7/1/2020 for this item and 5522: "very interesting tickets (why can't I find gems like these when I haunt old bookshops ?) and even better - a matched transfer pair ! The transfer is (I think) from the original McCaskey Systems printing for the "great fare revision" of March 1921, when most fares rose by ½d (or 1d on Sundays & Public Holidays), and is on the wider paper stock of those issues. The 2½d is from a later printing on narrower (but still "long") paper stock, but retains the black + coloured (value) ink on white paper scheme. The original issues had McCaskey's imprint and the value repeated on the back. They are a very nice pair. At some stage in the early/mid-1920s coloured paper tickets were again produced alongside the white-paper issues, before totally replacing them. Some of the colours were also altered. Sands & McDougall cornered the ticket-printing market about this time, blitzing all opposition with a press that produced 57 tickets at once - compared to everyone else's 2-at-a-time presses (Geoff Dean has more information on this). The "horizontal" format (similar to Sydney) was trialled in the late 1920s, and deemed a failure. The number of sections, their direction, and the use of Up/Down or In/Out varied over the years - I have put together a 'chronology' in order of issue, but unfortunately cannot assign dates of issue (yet ? ). 2nd email of 10/1/2021 Yes - keep those two tickets paired together (most people don't ); the only other matched transfer pair that I have seen was in Travis Jeffrey's collection. The 2½d ticket is a mid-1920s printing (from Sands & McDougall, so I am led to believe), the design being re-worked from their previous batch that had this value in red. There may have been another slight revision before the next design - of horizontal (Sydney-type) tickets - were issued. It would appear that horizontal format had already been used by the cable trams well before the electric trams, and that this "next horizontal issue" was used for both cable and electric trams. What I neglected to say before, was that this is an Electric System issue - as denoted by the "E.S." at the top: the alternate heading was "CABLE TRAMWAYS". Most enthusiasts mistake those initials to mean "Eastern System": demonstrably it is not, because there were "E.S." tickets issued specifically for use at Coburg and Essendon depots only (mostly return fares, with the destinations marked on the ticket).trams, tramways, tickets, mmtb, transfer tickets -

Animal specimen - Regent Parrot, Trustees of the Australian Museum, Taxidermy Regent Parrot, 1880-1860
This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. The Regent Parrot has two separate populations separated by the Nullarbor Plain: one in the Mallee regions of eastern Australia, and the other in the Wheatbelt region of southern Western Australia. Though the populations are widely separated, the birds of each region do not appear especially different, one being a little duller than the other. There are, however, other differences between the two populations, especially in how they have fared: eastern populations are endangered, while the western population is thought to be increasing. The Regent Parrot eats seeds of grasses and plants and cereal crops, especially wheat. It also eats buds and flowers, insect larvae, psyllids and lerps. It forages in pairs or small parties, usually on the ground, but also in the canopy of trees or in spilled grain on the ground. The Regent parrot is endangered in NSW and Vulnerable in VIC This Particular specimen has been mounted correctly.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.A slim parrot with a long, dusky tapering tail and back-swept wings. It is mostly yellow, with blue-black wings and tail. There is a prominent yellow shoulder patch and red patches in the wings. The bill is deep pink. George Box 1808-1867 an 'agricultural labourer', of Sussex England, married Mary Cripps in 1831 and with 3 three of their 4 four sons and 3 three of their 4 four daughters left Liverpool in the Sailing Ship 'Atlanta' in March 1856 to begin a new life in Melbourne, Victoria , Australia. George and son Henry paid their own fares while sons , Francis and John, were 'assisted passengers'. Their baby daughter Cecilia Lydia died a few days into the voyage.. Caroline Box, the eldest daughter, remained in England working as a cook until she joined the family in Australia in 1863. William Box 1834-1902, the eldest son of George Box, married Elizabeth Avis 1833- 1914 and they resided in Box Cottage 1865 -1914 where they established a market garden and raised 13 children. William and Elizabeth had emigrated in 1854 so George and sons probably worked on their market garden before setting up in Tucker Road and Patterson Road. Sadly Mary drowned in a water hole only 4 months after their arrival in Brighton. Mary suffered from headaches and had occasional fits and the coroner found she passed out and died while trying to ease the pain with cold water from a waterhole. It is supposed that Elizabeth helped him raise the children while he established his market garden. George died from Tetanus following an infected broken leg caused by falling from his dray in 1867. George and Mary were both buried in the Brighton Cemetery. Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . George Box was the father of William Box who with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841 Inscribed in Album : “ The early photos in this album were found by Mr (Laurie) Lewis when he was demolishing the Old Box Cottage. He gave them to Mrs Avis Box Eldridge who in turn gave them to me. They were not identified. I believe they rightly belong in the Cottage. Henry Box ,who was born in Withyham in 1839 , was the 3rd son of George and Mary Cripps Box and came to Australia in 1856 with the family. Henry paid his own fare so was not ‘bound’ to any employer. Henry helped his brother William establish his market garden on the site of Box Cottage, Jasper Road 1865 and by 1970 was purchasing property in East Brighton (Bentleigh.). He continued to purchase land, which he rent / leased to family members, and at his death owned property in East Boundary Road, Murrumbeena and Elsternwick. Henry married Elizabeth ‘Emma’ Ward in 1868 and they had 9 children but 2 died in infancy. ‘ Emma’ was the daughter of William Ward 1820- 1908 who was born in Norfolk and emigrated with his wife Ann Ostler in 1853. William Ward JP was a prominent figure in East Brighton . William was elected to the Moorabbin Road Board in 1863, JP at Cheltenham Court, and Shire President 1875-82. He was appointed Post Master at East Brighton in 1865 and held the position until his death in 1908 Henry was a member of the Court Pride of St George AOF, and a lay preacher at the Bentleigh Baptist Church.. Surviving Children were - Caroline Alma Box 1863-1943, Mary Anne Box 1865- ?, Lydia Elizabeth Box 1867- 1957, William Henry Box 1869- 1945, Emma Elizabeth Ellen Box 1875 – 1964, Olivia Christina ‘Chrissie’ Box 1878 – 1963, Archibald Ward Box 1882 -? Demonstrates and yields information about the considerations made for Weekly Tickets during the late 1920's.Set of handmade or hand written sheets regarding weekly tickets in Ballarat - using ink and pencil .1 - handwritten double foolscap sheet - titled "Weekly Tickets Ballarat" and dated 2/6/28 - sets out an extensive table of section, length, existing fares, present weekly and proposed tickets - 12 trips and 24? trips. Sets out conditions, current sales and notes. .2 - set of two Foolscap ruled sheets - titled "Weekly Tickets" detailing where they would be sold (the Showroom), the method of sales and accounting practices and when it can be used, reflects back to 1921 practices. Has a hand written section on the rear on the first sheets (images i2 to i4) .3 - single foolscap ruled sheet with further notes on weekly tickets (in light red ink), with two possible sketches of possible tickets on the rear in pencil. Yields information about the griding of wheels at the tram depot following the installation of a grinder by the SEC during the mid 1930's. Shows the nature of the work and set up.Black and White photograph, of the SEC Ballarat depot wheel grinder being used to grind the wheels of a single truck tramcar. Shows a pit man/machinist using the equipment with the drive belts and wheels moving. The machinist is dressed in heavy clothing. Shows the detail of the operation. 3054 - Printed form titled "Daily Traffic Revenue Statement" of the SEC, Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways, on off white heavy duty paper. Gives value of tickets up to 15c, , scholar and parcel tickets, special trams, value of tickets issues, cash paid in by conductor, value of tickets collected, surplus or deficiency and hospital vouchers and Outfit number of either side of the form. Has space for branch, as at date, with signatures of Compiler. Form has number TRM 583-1 (OP109) , with two large holes on left hand side for holding or filing into accounts books. Form ruled in blue ink horizontally and red ink vertically with some horizontal lines. A similar form, printed only in black, without the holes also donated by Peter Watt. Has fare values up to 18c. Set of 7 mixed SEC tickets ex Bendigo decimal conversion tickets or dual currency, donated by Peter. W. Watt. Tickets do not appear to have been used in traffic - no punch marks. Tickets have not been individually numbered with the Registration Number, but can be identified by their ticket number and denomination. Headings are: Early History, Creation of the SEC, Acquirement by the SEC, Agreements with Municipalities, SEC Act, Municipal By-Laws (Buses), proposed extension of the tramway routes, physical characteristics and changes at Geelong, Outlook of SEC as to tramways, Attempts to define transport future, review by the Geelong Tramway Operation by the SEC, tramcars, fares, staff and employees, trams used in normal traffic, daily mileage, average speed of services, service summary, passenger density, present outlook, prospective cost to be faced if existing system is continued, Possible improvements to the present system, extensions to the present tramway system, conclusions. Printed map (dye line process) on a large sheet of paper contained within an envelope. .1 - Brown paper envelope with a printed sheet glued to the envelope - giving title "The Melbourne Tramway System", publisher ("Unitrans - Universal Transport Research and Planning Services" - with a space for the retail price. .2 - Map printed on paper and folded into 16 parts - details the track layouts for routes and depot, route numbers, sections, Latrobe and William St services and details of fares. Has a sketch of tram 980 in the top right hand corner along with details of the tram system. Also includes depot locations, reserved tracks and derails at level crossings, though railway level crossings are not shown. Produced by Russell J. Nowell - gives address and phone number along with the "UniTrans" logo. Advised by other members, he was a Tasmanian. Not dated, but appears to be mid 1960's. Set of two used yellow cloth back paper tickets with white front, printed in black ink, with price and number shown on the ticket. Space for an expiry date to be stamped on the ticket and name, address and school of the student. The 1969 Fare Schedule (Reg. Item 7041) shows these tickets. 1797.1 - $3.50, Scholar under 18 years, Ticket No. A 002701, form number TYE 3-580, issued to Denise Forster, of 424 Errard St, Mary's Mount school. Stamped with expiry date of "14 May 71". Under ticket number has been written number "2815", which could indicate a correction to the ticket number. 1797.2 - $2.50, Scholar under 15 years, Ticket No. A 006751, form number TYE 3-570, issued to Kerin Bolton, of 707 Barkly St, Sacred Heart school. Yields information about the tram timetables applicable to Melbourne's trams, including cable and electric and demonstrates the spread of Melbourne's public transport system in the early 1920's.Forty Eight page printed book contained with oversize green heavy paper covers centre stapled with a coloured map glued into the rear cover of the book titled "OSBA Tram Time Tables with Railway and Tramway Map, of Melbourne and Suburbs". Published c1920 - shows Footscray system, Victoria St Flemington link, does not show Puckle St. Timetables details Fares, first and last cars for cable and electric lines, sections and other details of the various lines. Note page 44 and 45 cannot be accessed, paper not cut correctly during the printing process - leave as is. Yields information about the use of the Jelbart road roller by the Ballarat Tramways and the sale of a unit to the City of Ballarat.Set of documents concerning the Ballarat Jelbart Bros road roller that the SEC had purchased. .1 - Photocopy of part copy of a letter between Jelbart Bros and the City of Ballarat, dated 24/7/1923 concerning the purchase of a roller, guarantee and withholding a sum of money. Below the letter is an image of a roller with the name "Ballarat Electrical Tramways" written on it. .2 - Reproduction of a photograph of the roller pre 1936, working on tram track. The roller has the words "Ballarat Electric Tramways" painted on the side of it. Newspaper clipping titled: “Clang, Clang – All Aboard for Frustration” The Sun, Wednesday 7 July 1976 Day 3 of a Sun special by Michael Wilkinson New orange trams aren’t popular with passengers. Automatic doors closing, one entrance, queuing for tickets from seated conductor, overheating are some of the problems. Getting off through the only exit door can also be a problem. 41 new trams are now in service, costing $200, 000 each against original budget of $130K each. Critics of the “Z” class trams say the body design works in Sweden but not here. Cost savings against old green trams which have to be serviced daily, whereas Z class are serviced monthly. Fare evasion reduced as 98% of passengers now pay. 679 trams in fleet dating back to 1921. 440 (64%) made before 1940.
