The book details the first fifty years of Melbourne Legacy. The book was written by Mark Lyons. The foreword was written by Sir Roden Cutler V.C., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B.E.. Governor of New South Wales. From the National Library of Australia's website: 'The first Legacy club was formed in Melbourne in 1923 by a group of young men who had served together in the Australian forces in World War I. They were all in business and sought to help other ex-soldiers in business. After two years, they changed their objectives, deciding henceforth Legacy would care for the widows and children of their war-time comrades. Legacy clubs were soon functioning in all states in Victoria. There are now 47 Legacy clubs within Australia and one in London. They have almost 7000 members and care for over 100,000 widows and children, on whom nearly $3 million is spent annually, all of it raised by public subscription. This study, commissioned by Legacy for its fiftieth anniversary, provides the first detailed history of this uniquely Australian organization. Legacy is firmly rooted in Australian society. Its members are all returned servicemen and share in that special ex-service tradition that began with Anzac. They belong to Australia's middle class. They help people generally less well off than they, but manage to do so without demeaning its recipients. This history traces Legacy's first fifty years in considerable detail, but places it firmly within its social environment. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The identity of the woman in this mid 19th studio portrait is as yet unidentified. The tintype was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Between 1939 and January 1941, 575 members of rhe 20th Light Horse Regiment enlisted in the 2nd AIF. The Regiment was reinforced with men from all over Victoria called up for compulsory service.The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion.
