One of 2 identical wooden plaques created to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first breeding of a platypus in captivity. On the face of the plaque are 2 brass plates. The upper one is screwed to the wood and is slightly oval in shape and has a swimming platypus in the centre. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 4 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. This is a photograph of Orlando Henry Beater Christian, the father of the photographer, standing on the banks of the Yarra. Used in Victorian and New South wales Ambulances during the 1970s to resuscitate patients. The equipment was effective but replaced by newer versions then a different brand after a few years service (source Chas Martin AHSV curator 16 Mar 2016). From 1928 until the 1980s, Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows. Classes were held weekly at Legacy House and there was often a waiting list for the water classes, which had both swimming instruction and water exercises.
