They include the period from 1872 to 1893, just before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. During that time, he'd won a seat in parliament, which he held for 18 years, and for periods was a civil lord and parliamentary secretary for the Admiralty. He was passionate about the sea and addressed his naval and maritime concerns in public lectures, letters, pamphlets and books. He was also for a time lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria and president of the Institute of Naval Architects. This book is from Flagstaff Hill's ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. It was edited by Rear Admiral Sir Sydney Marow Eardley-Wilmot (1847 1929) of the Royal Navy, and published by Longmans, Green and Co. of London, The Longmans, Green and Co. was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. This photograph was with a number of others associated with Harry Holmes of Ascot, Victoria. The postcard was written on by Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Nurse Kirkham is Laurie Hemsley Kirkham She was admitted to the Suez Public Hospital (Abbassia) post 06 January 1916. She left Australia with a group of South Australian nurses. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt. (http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8888/about3.html) The Nurse Kirkam mentioned by the writer is probably Sarah Alice Kirkham, Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service. Nurse Kirkham was from North Perth, Western Australia. She was posted to the Auxiliary Hospital, Egypt on 09 November 1915 leaving for France on 23 June 1916. Samuel Gordon Spittle (8005) enlisted into the AIF on 17 July 1915, a member of the 18th Australian Army Service Corps (AASC). He left Alexandria on 15 June 1916 disembarking at Marseilles 24 June 1916. Harry Holmes was discharged from a hospital in Egypt on 15 August 1919. He was awarded the Military Medal promulgated on 11 December 1919. Chambers Edinburgh Journal is a magazine series which began in 1832. The founder was William Chambers. He was later joined by his brother Robert. A new magazine series began in 1844. In 1854 the Journal moved to London & became Chamber's Journal of Popular Literature, Science, and Art. At the end of 1897 the named changed to Chamber's Journal. Critical letter to Director from S. Allan Johnson re drainage. This letter (original and carbon copy) is addressed to the Director School of Horticulture Burnley. It is from S. Allan Johnson who gives the address of Henry George League, 18 George Parade, Melbourne. It is undated , and suggests that two authors are Mr Lothian and Miss N Chisholm, graduates of Burnley offer incorrect information on drainage in gardens. He includes 3 pages of instructions on drainage in gardens. There is a handwriten note on the back of the copy. The letter is full of typing and spelling mistakes. The brown paper envelope is addressed to the Burnley Horticultural Gardens, Burnley and is not postmarked. There is no stamp. (Hand delivered.) Clare Roper maintained and collected historical articles from the local newspapers especially those pertaining to the local area and of interest to the Kiewa Valley.Clare Roper grew up and lived in the Kiewa Valley at Tawonga. She was a member of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for many years.Black with thin alternating red and white strips from top to bottom 'Photo Album' used to attach newspaper clippings dated from the 1950s to the 1990s. The articles are of historical interest and include many from the Kiewa Valley. The Album has 3 metal rings which snap open and shut. There are approximately 60 pages each with a clear plastic sheet that opens up to allow insertion of the newspaper article. By chance he met Arthur Bird of Bird Orchard (bounded by Pitt Street, Eucalyptus Road and Wattle Grove) and they got talking over their common interest. Arthur put Frank up for the night and pointed out the land, part of Crown Allotment 15, Section 5, Parish of Nillumbik (CA15) somewhat diagonally opposite Bird Orchard. Frank bought the land and for the next two years would travel by train from Melbourne to Eltham every weekend establishing Stokes Orchard and building a home for his family, which they eventually moved into in 1946. In the mid 1970s the Shire of Eltham divided the orchard up into numerous rate-able parcel lots, which became affordable for Frank. As a consequence Stokes Orchard was turned into a housing development by Macquarie Builders and marketed as the Stokes Orchard Estate in two stages; Stage 1 encompassing Scarlet Ash Court, Ironbark Close and Peppermint Grove bounded by Nyora and Eucalyptus roads c.1976 and Stage 2 encompassing Stokes Place, Orchard Way, The Crest and The Lookout bound by Nyora and Diosma roads c.1979.
