The Ballarat School of Mines was the first school of mines in Australasia. It is a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia. The Ballarat Junior Technical School was under the jurisdiction of the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1949-50 the aims of the school was to: 1. Give all students a sound general and cultural education to the Intermediate standard for technical Schools. 2. Prepare those with the necessary ability for the higher professional courses of the Ballarat School of Mines in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Mining engineering, Applied Chemistry, Metallurgy, Assaying, Architecture, Art and Crafts or technical Teaching. 3. In addition to a sound education, it gives students not proceeding to the higher courses, a pre-vocational training which will enable them to become competent artisans in any of the skilled apprenticeship.Five page booklet on white paper with blue ink. The M.B. John Building (Building K), a three storey, face red brick, restrained Late Twentieth Century International styled building with an elongated, cuboid form (defined by the parapeted facades) that is offset by projecting exposed concrete framed, round‐arched entrance and stair wells on the east (Albert Street) elevation (the centrally located entrance breaking the brick façade with glazing). The facades are also characterised by banks of aluminium framed, horizontal ribbon windows, which wrap around the building corners. Metal shades project beyond the windows, while post‐supported bullnosed verandahs and hoods and projecting concrete stairs are other features. On the west elevation, the cuboid façade is punctuated by projecting curved concrete and glazed, elongated bays at first floor level. Edith (Alice) WATSON (1914–2010) Murtoa | Australia Alice Watson studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School (at the School of Mines, Ballarat) from 1930 until 1933. Watson sat several departmental exams, including drawing and painting plant forms from nature, lettering, Composition of Form and Colour and advanced General Design, as well as dressmaking and embossed leatherwork. Her folio applies many Australian native floral elements to design. Upon graduating, Watson taught at the Murtoa High School, living with her parents until their deaths in 1972 and 1988 when she was 74 years old.
