Photograph - Monier Bridge Collapse, May, 1902
In 1867 Frenchman, Joseph Monier patented reinforced concrete horticultural troughs. In 1873 this process was extended to iron reinforced bridges with the first bridge built in 1875. In Australia, Sir John Monash of Monash and Anderson company, originally built 8 Monier bridges in Bendigo all single arch except Weeroona Ave., which was a double arch. Six of these remain.Black and white photograph. Steam rollers appears to have collapsed from a Monier bridge with men investigating amidst the rubble with one steam roller remaining on the bridge, and another resting in a creek underneath. Document - M. Symons' Murpheys Creek Exercise Book
Land was first selected at Murphy's Flat in 1865. The first Wesleyan church was built in 1866 and from 1869 this was used as State School 149. A purpose built school, No. 1311 opened mid 1876. The areas name was changed to Murphy's Creek in 1915.A blue and white exercise book. Attached within are various subscription receipts in the front and back, including the "Australian Home Journal," "Singer Sewing Machine Company," and an "Annual Audit of Depositors' Pass-books by the State Savings Bank of Australia. Booklet - Axe Creek Rural Fire Brigade - 75th Anniversary 1912-1987, 1987
The Axe Creek Bush Fire Brigade was formed in 1912 with each landowner contributing 1/- per year. By 1920 the brigade had amassed equipment consisting of rakes, brooms, a 100 gallon water tank and a hand pump. The "McIvor Times" first published 29 issues in 1863. In 1852 gold was discovered along the McIvor Creek and within six months 40,000 men had rushed to the scene.
