Book, Alfred Joyce, A homestead history : being the reminiscences and letters of Alfred Joyce of Plaistow and Norwood, Port Phillip, 1843 to 1864, 1969
A HOMESTEAD HISTORY Alfred Joyce began a pastoral partnership with his brother in the Upper Loddon early in 1844. His reminiscences reveal events of the venture, from the departure from Melbourne with the completion of a roomy homestead, from the threat of bankruptcy, to substantial success within a decade. In writing them, he was not dependent upon his memories; the many letters he had written to his parents in London had eventually been returned to him, and those written between 1851 and his mother's death in 1858 form a continuation of his own narrative. They describe in vivid detail the upheavals that followed the discovery of gold, the transformation of both town and country, the dissolution of the Joyce brothers' partnership, and Alfred's activities as pastoralist, farmer and miller at Norwood on die Bet Bet Creek. In this third edition, for which a much wider range of illustrations is available, an epilogue continues the story of George Joyce at Plaistow and Alfred Joyce at Norwood until both properties had passed into other hands. Domestic tragedy overwhelmed the one, while droughts and mortgages eventually ruined the other. It is a record which, in the words of the American Historical Review, 'would serve as script for a first-class documentary film and deserves high rank, in the literature of pastoral pioneering'. Other reviewers have been equally emphatic: 'The real history of Australia is written very largely in such records as this' (Australian Quarterly); 'of historical documents such as diese we cannot have too many' (Sydney Morning Herald). Photograph, 27th February 2004
Photograph of Quoll taxidermy, part of the Quoll presentation at the Wooragee Hall on Friday, 27th February, 2004 as part of an event called Foxy Night Out. Foxy Night Out is part of a land fox control project. This workshop is conducted to help private and public community members to understand foxes and effective fox control techniques, and its impact to agriculture and other animals. Quolls are carnivorous marsupials native to Australia and New Guinea. They grow up to 125cm and weighs up to 5kg. The spotted-tail Quoll is now the largest carnivore on the mainland. Quolls have black to fawn fur, white spots, long and thin tails. Quolls can attack livestock like chickens. They are known for sharp teeth that enables them to sustain a diet that involves poultry meat. They hunt for their families. Historically, Quolls are treated as pests and were trapped or poisoned by people who are protecting their chickens. This photograph contributes to the scientific and historical records on fox control in Victoria. It reflects the effects of foxes and quolls to livelihood, thus, creates a picture of Victorian agriculture, trade, and community activities. Photograph, c1997
This photograph contains an array of different musical instruments being used by a band in a performance. The instruments visible in the photo include the Cymbals, Double bass, Trumpets, Trumbones, Tuba and Clarinets. Given the assortment of instruments present it is clear that this ensemble is an orchestral band. All of these instruments require the musician to be sitting while performing as depicted in the photograph. This photo was taken in 1997 and highlights the diversity of the band members, which includes both young and old men and women all working together to deliver a performance. While the details of the event are still unknown, it is safe to assume that this was taken during a formal performance due to the formal attire worn by the band members. This photo captures a specific time and event in amazing detail while showcasing the historic use of these intruments in a social setting. This photograph carries great historic significance as it depicts the historic use of these instruments within the context of an orchestral band performance. With this knowledge, one can track the importance and use of these instruments across time as well as understand the type of events and activities associated with the people and communities that attended these gatherings, as both performers and audience members. Book, Jill Sebire, As I remember-- : memories of life in the Wandin district, 2006
Beenak Road, Wandin Hall, the Stringybark Creek, Clements' shop, Wandin Yallock State School... all names that spark vivid memories for anyone who has lived in or around Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Jill Sebire invited a wide cross-section of 'locals' to share their memories of community and family life. The result is a rich and entertaining group of personal stories. This is not a formal history, though it covers many of the milestones of the community's growth since European settlement in the 1860s. Instead, it highlights the events, people and places that have stayed fresh in the writers' minds. 'As I Remember ..' ensures that these memories can be enjoyed into the future. Anyone who has lived in a small community will recognise many of the characters and activities. For those who have a connection with the Wandin district. 'As I Remember...' will bring back the sights and sounds of Saturday night dances, the annual trip to the beach, the Easter sports at the Wandin Recreation Ground, fruit-picking, football and cricket matches, and perhaps even the night the Rechabite Hall burnt down.(back cover)non-fictionBeenak Road, Wandin Hall, the Stringybark Creek, Clements' shop, Wandin Yallock State School... all names that spark vivid memories for anyone who has lived in or around Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Photograph, 5 September 2004
This photograph was taken during a bus excursion to Tatong in North East Victoria, held by the Wooragee Landcare Group in September 2004. The purpose of the excursion was to look at land use on small farms. As part of this, the excursion included a visit to Samaria Farm, run by Sue and Don Matheson. In this photo, taken at Samaria Farm, Don Matheson is discussing the management of his commercial rose garden. Events like this meet Wooragee Landcare's organisational goals of promoting best land management practices, cooperating and engaging with landowners, and providing information on plant management and care. This object is significant as a record of Wooragee Landcare's activities and community involvement. Landscape colour photograph printed on gloss photographic material. Article - Festivities for arrival of North-Eastern Railway in Wodonga, The Illustrated Australian News, 1873
The arrival of the railway from Melbourne to Wodonga was celebrated on 21st November 1873. The railway line between Melbourne and Wodonga was constructed in three sections. The first section from Essendon to Seymour was fifty-six miles. It was constructed by Messrs. O'Grady, Leggatt and Noonan at a cost of £305,558. The second section from Seymour to Benalla was sixty miles under contract to Messrs. Styles, Murray and Co. for £314,994. The final section of sixty six miles to Wodonga was constructed by Messrs. Cain, Dalrymple and Holton for £350,100. The Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers 4 December 1873 reported extensively on the event. The Victorian Government was determined to celebrate the event with a banquet, to which twelve hundred guests were invited. Four special trains had departed Melbourne to bring dignitaries to Wodonga. The Governor Sir George Bowen, Lady Bowen and, two Misses Bowen, were among the guests. Sir George Bowen proposed a toast to the “Prosperity to the North-eastern railway”. The banquet was held in marquees erected for the event, although the facilities struggled to cater adequately for the more than 5,000 people who arrived to celebrate. The estimated population of Wodonga was 500 only people. That evening a ball was held in the goods' shed, which was handsomely decorated with flags, evergreens and flowers. About five hundred guests were present. It would be another decade before New South Wales completed the line from Sydney to Albury and a connecting rail bridge was built over the Murray River. This item is significant because it documents the festivities celebrating the arrival of the railway line in Wodonga.A colourised version of a newspaper article documenting the celebrations for the arrival of the North Eastern Railway to Wodonga. It depicts crowds of people congregated near the railway line area. Large tents have been erected to house visitors and special activities. The railway goods shed can be seen in the background and a steam locomotive is on the track. The image was accompanied by a lengthy article which detailed the development of the railway line.northeast railway line, wodonga transport
