A book titled 'Newspaper Cuttings' in gold leaf with black leather binding and corners on blue cloth covered cardboard cover. Stiff paper pages inside numbered top right -hand corners 1-90 in printed black ink. Poor condition overall. Pages 37 - 44 missing. Page 45-46 pertaining to Violet Jolley separately bagged. Entries mostly pertain to Mr Howard Jolley , an aviation field inspector of the Life Insurance Company of Australia. First entry page 16 -17 contains photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to an air crash on Bendigo racecourse in May 1921. Jolley was involved in numerous air-crashes for the next ten years. Photographs and newspaper cuttings related to these, along with dinner invitations, etc, are pasted into the book. Scrapbook (based on 1933 Nestle Diary - diary has 26 pages of information relating to Nestlé’s products pre and post-natal). Entries written in ink, finishes on Feb 15, probably written by a teenage girl. Diary is then used as a scrapbook with newspaper cuttings pasted on first 107 pages. Diary entries continue on Pages 122 to 158 [related to details of a 'Rose' and a marigold being observed; references to Guides (Girl)]. Several loose cuttings are in book (dates later than 1933). This six-postcard group is the third in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. The 57th had a company of men largely from Bendigo and Eaglehawk. These postcards are from his personal album. Many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled 'The Bendigo Fuse Factory by Amy Huxtable.' In 1860 Mr. Charles Perry set up as Proprietor of stamper grating works and was later joined by his nephew Mr. W. Hunter. During this time Mr. Perry worked on a model machine for constructing safer fuses. In 1876 Mr. Charles Perry built a fuse factory in Wattle Street. He refined his machines making them larger and very suitable for building safer fuses. In 1888 the English firm of fuse manufacturers Bickford, Smith & Co., purchased the factory and the secret of the manufacture. In 1912 the Wattle Street building was purchased by Tony Patterson and Huon Matear and was known as the Economic Manufacturing Co. (Bendigo White Works) making underwear. This was followed by Crestknit Industries which ceased operation in 1977. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Icy: Cousen's Freezing Works, McIvor road, circa 1900. Robert Cousen was established as a pork butcher in View Street, Bendigo, by 1897. The ham and bacon business could kill 50 pigs per week. In addition to the wholesale premises, Cousen had extensive freezing works which supplied ice to the people of Bendigo.
