The Glenelg Shire Council was established by an Order-in-Council under the Local Government Act 1989, published in the Victorian Government Gazette S63 on 23 September 1994. These letters came to Portland on the 'City of Sydney' under Captain Henderson. This ship was owned by the Henty brothers. Captain James Fawthrop was the harbour master at Portland and also captain of the Portland Lifeboat crew at the time of the wrecking of the Admella in 1859.Hand-written letter in glass bottle. Part of the Kurtze Collection purchased by the City of Portland in 1990s from Brendan Kurtze. Theo Frederics said his grandfather used this gun to shoot porpoise. He was a fisherman - Frederickson? Changed name when migrated to Australia from Sweden. Further research with Theo and other family personal conversation with Theo Frederics (Gordon Stokes 1997)Wooden stock, bronze breech, steel barrel. City of Portland. The Portland Lifeboat was used in the rescue of survivors from the Admella shipwreck. It is also unique in its design having been based on a winning design from the RNLI in the UK and then adapted for Australian conditions.
