It may also be associated with Palmer's Chemist in Lydiard Street Ballarat. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is investigating how institutions like schools, churches, sports clubs and government organisations have responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse. It is the job of the Royal Commission to uncover where systems have failed to protect children so it can make recommendations on how to improve laws, policies and practices. The Royal Commission is about creating a safer future for children. It can look at any private, public or non-government organisation that is, or was in the past, involved with children. The Methodist Home Missions was the department running the work of smaller churches and charitable institutions such as babies' homes, the Epworth Hospital, chaplaincies to hospitals and prisons, aged care homes, alcohol rehabilitation, local missions to depressed areas and the like. A minister was appointed each year by Conference, on deputation, to travel around Victoria to explain and encourage local congregations to support the work of the missions. Livingstone House was established in Carlton in 1888, and was first known as the Temporary Home for Destitute Children. It was run by the Central Dorcas Society, and led by its Senior Biblewoman, Mrs Varcoe. Many children in Livingstone were placed in foster care. In 1891, it relocated to a new property in Cheltenham and later became the Methodist Homes for Children. Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. He was dismissed from his position at St Alipius' school in Ballarat for heresy. He had a particular interest in the Federation of Australia and formation of the Constitution, which features in his poem "Australia". O'Dowd co-edited Tocsin with Jack Andrews. Tocsin was a labor newspaper in Melbourne. Others involved with the newspaper include Edward Findley and, for a short time, Norman Lindsay. Lin ONUS (1948-1996) Lin Onus was integral to the recognition of Aboriginal art in the contemporary Australian art landscape. His work expresses the dynamism of living culture; Onus was a prominent figure in renegotiating the history of colonial and Aboriginal Australian. An early influence of this dedication was his father, who was the founder of the Aboriginal Advancement League in Victoria and a maker of artefacts. As a young boy Onus was subsequently exposed to visiting Aboriginal artists and assisted his father in decorating artefacts. An Australian food production company specialising in ham, bacon and smallgoods, had factories in Brisbane, Sydney and Freemantle before buying the factory of Roberts Osborne Co. in Golden Square in 1913. Over 5000 pounds was spent refurbishing the factory to bring it up to current health and safety requirements, including the installation of electricity. In addition the company established retail outlets at Bath Corner and Hargreaves Street. The company arranged for the Golden Square railway station to be used to offload stock rather than the Bendigo station. The company was well known for its "Rex" brand of goods. In Bendigo the company even sported its own cricket team. Hubert Ingham Clements (1886-1969) was an Australian engineer who established his own engineering business in NSW in 1908 manufacturing combustion engines. He became interested in anaesthesia equipment and from the 1920s Clements worked on improving ether apparatus and manufacturing portable suction machines for use in hospital operating theatres. The latter machines were to earn an unrivalled reputation for reliability; many remained in service over thirty years after their date of production. The business became H. I. Clements & Son when his son William joined the company. WW1 Australian soldier Holmes Famiiy memento. Estaires is a town and commune in the Department of the Nord, about 11 kilometres west of Armentieres. The Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension is on the eastern outskirts of the town and on the east side of the road to Bailleul. Estaires town was occupied by French cavalry on the 15 October 1914, and passed at once into British hands. On the 10 April 1918 it was captured by the enemy, after an obstinate defence by the 50th (Northumbrian) Division; and it was finally retaken by British troops at the beginning of September 1918. The town was a Field Ambulance centre as early as November 1914, and later the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station was posted in it. In the 1970s this church had met in temporary premises in Eltham. Lots of the original 1920s subdivision remained south of Nyora Road and a number of these lots were utilized for the Eltham Christian School, which was established by the Eltham Christian Church in 1981. The school operated on this site until 2000. The premises were owned by the Nillumbik Community Church who were in operation till November 2010 when the Eltham Baptist Church commenced a lease arrangement until the site was purchased by them in April 2012. The building is constructed of brick and timber with a balcony on two sides that looks over an expanse of grass. Shows the original building on the northern platform of the Mont Albert station. The railway line was extended out to Lilydale with work commencing in 1882. Mont Albert station opened in 1890. It is presumed that this building was demolished when the third line was constructed in 1971. At the same time the nearby Surrey Hills original station buildings were demolished. ARCHIBALD RUSSELL (1905-1949) Until 1922 completed numerous cargo voyages to Sydney, Newcastle, Fremantle, Geelong, and especially Melbourne. In 1923 she was bought by Gustaf Erikson, the famous Finnish ship-owner, and carried timber to Melbourne in 1926, 1927 and 1928, and carried grain from Geelong in 1927 and Williamstown in 1929 - and that was the year she won the Grain Race (93 days). She then carried grain from South Australia until the war and was then was taken over by the British and used as a food storehouse through the war. She was broken up in 1949 on Tyneside. The bed jacket, a woman's garment, is a waist-length robe worn to cover the chest, shoulders and arms while sitting up in bed. Its short length and cape-like cut allowed it to be put on (or removed) while in bed. Often made of sheer or lacy fabrics and displaying very feminine trimmings and details, it was often used more for seduction, rather than warmth or modesty. It was popularized in 1930s Hollywood films featuring glamorous settings and glamorous stars lounging languorously in their silken bedrooms. Ostrich feather tips, swan’s down, pleated tulle and shirred lace were just a few examples of the extravagant materials that could be used in creating these confections. The 'Paragon' was Keystone's first patented stereoscope. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pa., was the world's largest producer of stereographs and was in business from 1892 to 1970 on a limited basis. The company was founded by Benneville L. Singley who at one time worked for Underwood. Singley photographed many of the views sold by Keystone. Keystone would eventually purchase almost all of their competitors. The remains of the Keystone Company are housed at the University of California. Singley filed for 2 patents for stereoscopes, the first in 1898, about the time Keystone started producing them. C. L. Modern iron cooking ‘ranges’ were being introduced from the late 18th century, however a vast number of people cooked in open fireplaces, well into the 1800s. Generally they were fitted with iron rods suspended above the fire or ‘cranes’ that could be swung in and out for easier and safer access to the pots that hung from them. These cooking systems may seem rudimentary, but a skilled cook knew how to manage pots, pans, cauldrons and pokers and expose them to the right type of heat by positioning them in various parts of the fireplace.
