This item is part of a collection donated by Helmut Grzegozewski (Ziggy) who served in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment from December 1967 to November 1968. A laminated copy of The tunnel Rats Vietnam. The banner represents all four of the Vietnam Field Troop from 1965 - 1971. Surrounding the insignia of the Tunnel Rats are the names of the various troops and units. Under the Insignia is a description of the banner. Our banner, with its distinctive rat armed with a pistol and torch portrayed in the traditional 1 Field Squadron colours of red and blue. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Gloves worn as part of Alan Reed's dress uniform. This item was donated as part of the estate of Air Vice Marshal Alan Reed, the first Patron of NVVM. Alan served in the RAAF between June 1952 and November 1990. The only RAAF pilot to fly the Lincoln, Canberra F-4 Phantom and F-111 in RAAF service, he served in Vietnam from 26 May 1968 until 20 November 1968. Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were an accepted form of payment on military bases but could generally not be used to buy local goods or services. When American officials believed that a series of MPC was being used fraudulently on the black market, a new series would be released, making the previous version worthless. The F.R.E.D otherwise known as the “F*cking Ridiculous Eating Device” was introduced in 1943 as part of Sir Stanton Hicks' "Operation Ration Type O2," Australia's first military rations that lasted 24 full hours. This F.R.E.D. matches the second iteration of the combination can opener and spoon popularised during the Vietnam War, and belonged to the uncle of Ian Taylor. Ian remembers his uncle telling him about using F.R.E.D. during WWII, primarily to open baked beans. It is claimed in some military histories that, after the F.R.E.D.’s introduction in 1943, Australian soldiers developed a ‘strange attachment’ to the F.R.E.D., keeping the utensils far after their service was up and, in this case, passing them on to future generations as bean openers.
