Reproduced on p40 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Mr Robert Harris (centre) was associated with the paper for forty-seven years. The Printing office of the 'Evelyn Observer' at Kangaroo Ground operated from about 1872 until it became the 'Advertiser' and moved to Hurstbridge during the 1914-1918 war. The building was then used as Shire Office, later destroyed by fire 8 Feb. 1934. Photograph, Eltham, Main Road near station, c.1910
View looking north along Main Road, Eltham from near present day Dudley Street. On the immediate left is the railway station. The large weatherboard building on the bend (opposite present-day Arthur Street) with signs for General Store, Refreshments and Summer Drinks painted on the side is Luther and Ada Haley’s General Store and Bakery, built 1902. This was the first building in what is now Eltham’s present shopping town centre. Haley previously ran the General Store and Bakery on the corner of Main Road and York Street until his lease expired and the premises were bought by Mrs Sarah Burgoyne in 1902. The store later was known as Staff's Store. Followed by the saleyards, entrance to station, slaughter yard and William J Capewell’s butcher shop. Contained within the saleyards facing the street, a small shelter with the name H.H. Clark upon it. Horace Harold Clark was the son of Eltham State School’s first Head Teacher, David George Clark. As well as being a farmer, he was an Estate Agent and conducted auction sales, presumably from this shelter. On the eastern (right) side of Main Street is Haley’s Paddock, which was used on occasions for community picnics. Capable of holding 10,000 people, with ample shade and hilly surroundings it was an ideal place for any community gathering such as the State Schools’ Picnic in 1904. A worker from the bakery store is standing in the gateway at the rear of the store observing the photographer. People in the ‘Sunday Best’ are milling in front of the bakery or strolling down the centre of Main Road. The picture was most likely taken on a Sunday. With the opening of the railway to Eltham in 1902, Melbourne residents would regularly enjoy a Sunday excursion journey on the train to Eltham for a day’s outing to the countryside or beyond to Hurstbridge from 1912 when the railway was extended. Picture dated as c.1910 based on similar picture published in the Weekly Times, Feb. 1912. Cross Ref: 609 (looking south), 612, 611 (later stage), 613.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Founder of Montsalvat Reproduced Page 106 of Pioneers & Painters, edited by Alan Marshall (1971) Note: print in book and print copy are mirror imaged There was probably little earth building done in the district in this century until 1934, when Justus Jorgensen, architect and artist, bought land in Eltham and with his students and followers commenced to build the fascinating complex of buildings now know as ‘Montsalvat’. These buildings and his use of materials, both local stone and earth, and reclaimed materials, were to have a remarkable influence on the Eltham district-particularly in the period following World War II. The first building at ‘Montsalvat’ was a picturesque house of or rammed earth with a high-pitched roof. Jorgensen has used a variety of building materials but it is possibly his use of earth, both pise-de-terre and mud brick, which has had the most influence on the environmental building in Eltham in the post war years. By the end of the 1940s, an impressive array of adobe and pise buildings had been completed. – Alan Marshall, 1971, “Pioneers & Painters”This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Letter, Nillumbik Shire Council regarding the Nillumbik Festival for 1995, 11 September 1995, 1995
Information pack advising the Nillumbik Festival has succeeded the Eltham Festival and is to be held 11-12 November 1995. Theme is "Nillumbik - Building the Future Together". Includes information on how community groups can be involved featuring the Grand Parade, Stage Performances and Sporting displays, Stalls and general notes on stall sites and Registration form The Nillumbik Festival was introduced as a replacement for the Eltham Festival following the disbandment of Eltham Shire Council in December 1994 and the creation of Nillumbik Shire Council. It was an attempt to draw away from Eltham and be more inclusive of the wider communities in Nillumbik. However other local communities had their own festivals and the concept of a Nillumbik Festival was never widely accepted by the community and it shortly reverted back to the Eltham Fesitval in 1997.A4 copy paper, 7 pages, white and pink coloured1995, application form, eltham festival, nillumbik festival, nillumbik shire council -

A T-class diesel-electric locomotive can bee seen through the window hauling a Tait train. Also advertising on the buildings facing passing train passengers including 'Dialyn's Theatre Shoppe for Nightingale Tightlets & Leotards'. This is not a conventional suburban Tait ‘Red Rattler’ service. It may have come from Lilydale where trains from both Warburton and Healsville were combined to continue the run into Melbourne, a normal service for them at the time. It is unusual as the train is hauled by a diesel which also suggests it may have been a special excursion train from either of those two towns. Normally these combined trains would be hauled by two swing door ‘Red Rattlers’ motor coaches from Lilydale, the start/end of electric service. Churchill Street shops just visible on right of image. The grass embankment visible in the distance on the left of the track is from where another view looking down the track beside Churchill Street was taken. Shows the original building on the northern platform of the Mont Albert station. The railway line was extended out to Lilydale with work commencing in 1882. Mont Albert station opened in 1890. It is presumed that this building was demolished when the third line was constructed in 1971. At the same time the nearby Surrey Hills original station buildings were demolished. George noted that he had donated a black and white print copy of this image some years earlier to the Surrey Hills Historical Society - see SHP2018/21/6 https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/5d6a450a21ea670e188d05c9Digital TIFF file Scan of Kopdak 620 black and white negative transparencygeorge coop collection, churchill street, mont albert railway station -
