Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. When Brighton was first incorporated as a borough in 1859, the first seal and coat of arms of the municipality depicted a market gardener. Spade in one hand and fruit in the other, the gardener is surrounded by a cornucopia of produce, a ploughman toiling the field behind him, and a mill in the distance. It is underscored by the motto ‘By their fruits ye shall know them’.Oil paint on metal on shaped wood shield, depicting a figure of a standing male pioneer holding a spade in one hand and fruit in the other. A fruit tree directly behind him, two pineapples to the right and a cornucopia bearing fruit to the left. John Kerr Barnes. Life Membership is a nomination by the Sub - Branch. Jack as known was first elected to the Committee of the Bendigo Sub - Branch in 1955 and held that position until he was elected to the position of Secretary in 1964 and held that till he retired in 2005 (43 years) the entire time he did this from the Soldiers Memorial Institute which was the HQ of the Bendigo Sub Branch. He then became a Museum guide at the Soldiers Memorial Institute until his death in 2011. He was also involved in fund raising particularly the stall they had at the Bendigo Show and the Melbourne Cup sweep the Branch had. The Bostock, Manifold and Aitkin families were all pioneering families in the Western District of Victoria almost from the time of settlement. They leased and owned vast tracts of land and operated businesses around the district, often associated with the farming industry. This document is dated 5th July 1865 and is an assignment of stock by way of mortgage. Augustus Bostock is the mortgagor with James William Manifold Aitkin and Ernest Bostock as mortgagees. At various times they were involved in running businesses together, in particular the Aitkin and Bostock store and flour mill. Three of the Bostock men were married to three of the Aitkin sisters. The amount in question is £2157/3/2 and surety is 8000 sheep and their increase, presently running at Coomete. The penciled in details on the document refer to Robert Brand Paterson who was later in business with Aitkin This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. The document itself is indicative of its time and provides an insight into the details and terms of such documents at the time.Large grey coloured, lined hand written document over four pages. R.M. Serjeant was listed as a mining manager and Joseph Flude as a metallurgist. In 1875 they were both living in Ballarat. The patent number is A.D.1875, 4th March. No 2031. According to the patent the hearth of the furnace is in the form of a cone revolving horizontally. The feed is supplied to the apex of the cone by an archimedian screw. The crown of the furnace comprises a double covering or roof with an intermediate chamber for receiving heated air. The inner covering is pierced to admit of the heated air being brought into contact with the pyrites on the face of the revolving hearth. The discharge of the roasted substance is affected by means of a scraper at the base of the cone. It was claimed that this was a new mode of introducing heated air, and the exclusion of flame during the operation of roasting pyrites. The self-acting charge and discharge of the furnace and the peculiar construction of the hot air chambers, and the use of perforated bricks through which the supply of air is affected were also new. From the 1860s, colonists in the Moorabbin district discovered tomato growing was very successful. Tomatoes and tomato products from the Moorabbin District won prizes as far afield as NZ., London, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, India as well as in Melbourne. Two particularly successful growers were Henry Comport of Cheltenham, and Edward Zorn at Clayton. As a result of this extensive tomato growing many factories 'sprang up' in the Moorabbin district to process the produce, one of which was the "Tom Smith Pty Ltd" factory. An Advertisement on the 29th August c1912, in the Brighton Southern Cross newspaper for Tom Smith's Tomato Sauce states that it is - "Superior. From absolutely Pure Locally Grown Tomatoes. Put up in our own bottles. A High-Grade Article. Manufactured at Highett Railway Station. Smith & Lambert Manufacturers" Phone Cheltenham 206.This item is significant because it relates to the prize-winning major industry of tomato growing that the Moorabbin colonist market gardeners commenced in the 1860s. Many tomato processing factories also sprang up in the district at that time. Because the tomato industry was virtually wiped out by a virus that attacked the plants in the very early 1900s very few tangible artefacts now remain that relate to what was once an important industry.A clear glass machine-made tomato sauce bottle. The neck of the bottle indicates that the contents were originally sealed with a cork at the top. The glass appears to be of poor quality as air bubbles are evident and was moulded, not hand-blown. The bottle is embossed on the front with the manufacturer's name, and location.
