Provides information about the two-day enquiry held by the Victorian Transport Regulation board into the SEC operated Ballarat Tramway system. Enquiry held at the Ballarat Court House, by Messrs J Bolster, E V Field (Chairman) and J O Mactier of the TRB. Two photos show the Board and some of the attendees. Page 2 of the 3 April report; the acting assistant manager of the SEC advised that the tramway was unsafe, deaths due to collisions with trams, costs of refurbishing the tracks and tramcars and employment issues. Evidence was also given by the Mayor of Ballarat, Cr. Nicholson, Ballarat Town Clerk Mr Maddern, Barry Wilkins, H A Davis local bus operators. The Board considered whether the existing services could be replaced by private operators, or a publicly operated service, including the cost of operators. Also submissions from Mr O'Shea of the ATOMEA, Ballarat Trams and Labor Council, and Chamber of Manufacturers. At the time, the Government did not have the numbers in the upper house to close the system. Yields information about an 1968 enquiry into the closure of the Ballarat Tramway system. Domestic Object - Butter dish, Cambridge, 1960's
Yields information about the SEC's provision of awards to employees for 12 months of safety and has a strong association with the person that the award was granted to.Two piece butter dish - nickel plated silver tray with an "Electricity Supply Department" badge glued to the dish with the SEC logo and words "Safety Award" and a glass dish - fluted that acts as a butter or jam dish. Advised by Donor, that following the award - 12 months without an accident, he was involved in one the following day. Stamped on rear of dish "Cambridge A1 Quality". Yields information about tramway accidents in Drummond St Ballarat, during the SEC era and in particular on in 1941 when a tram was derailed and hit a tree resulting in substantial damage. Significance is reduced by the quality of the photocopy but gives the source details.Photocopy of a photograph that appeared in The Age Melbourne newspaper of 2-12-1941 of tram No. 24 that had collided with a truck at corner of Drummond Sth and Dana St the previous day. Hand coloured black and white photograph of the Ballaarat Tramway Co. horse tram fleet massed for a group photograph within the Gardens, at one of the loops. May have been taken on the same day as items 800 in 1903 About the same number of horse trams. Close up of some the trams. The first has "CONVENT" destination and "Havelock Tobacco" advertisements. Alongside the tram is the front of a motor vehicle. Cable tram 81? In the background is a number of shops - L. Johnson Saddler, S. Christie and J Hogan (?) Trotting Sulky Manufacturers and A.
